Hi all, I've been growing for a few months now and our electric bill came in and its huge!! I'm an electrician and now how to by pass my electric meter? Would anyone advise this? People say that the power company would be able to tell that it maybe by passed without looking at the meter, it will be by passed in such away that you will not be able to tell by looking at it?
Has anayone else done this? :-?

if your not running 6KW an hour i wouldn't even worry about it.... it takes alot more for the local LE to come visit you with a SW.. The DA would laugh at em if they did... So to me, your asking for an investigation by bypassing.. just my opinion....

    best of luck tho

Not a good idea... they can tell by area..then track back...plus if you ever watch the TV show Holmes on Homes..he works on an ex grow house, and because the power was diverted the home owner or the named person on the bill can be libel to a fine of $30,000 for theft of utility...

Im from the uk, never seen holmes homes, but i just cant see how they track back, there is no way the could put a meter aound my cable to seee how many amps i'm pulling as the cable is burried under ground. I've currently got my lights on during the day...which prob isnt a good idea as its at peak prices then!! Anyone from the uk could tell me their electric price for the month? If we stay with britsih gas, which also do our electric, we would pay around £106 a month just for electric!! Ive only got a 250W hps and a little fan!

If its just about saving money i wouldnt bother, if it is that much more to pay then u must have some huge grow on, an average grow for personal use will use no more electricity than a full p.c system e.g my p.c runs a 600w power supply just the p.c with out the screen speakers internet hub etc. So there fore the electricity company would neverknow any difference.

I think it was because when we moved in (last year) our bill was estimated and we was only paying £20 for electric and because they never came round to read the meter, the billwent sky high! My GF deals with the bills so not sure whats really going on, but she is changing it to scottish and southern at capped rates and it will work out to be about £50 a month. So what people are saying is its not really worth it just for a 250W light? I was planning to use a 400W light soon. Leafy I can see where you are coming from when you put it to comparison with a pc as you say! hmmmm? still a bit indecisive....

I would not attempt to bypass the electric meter myself as who needs the additional paranoia that might arise? Not me...

Good luck with the grow, and be wise!

Im with SSE and i m sure im at a ton a month AND I have Gas heating on top of that. Not using much the now, but thats another 4-500 to fill my tank.

Thats the reason I asked what you paid and what you consumed. I agree with leafysmell about the pC comparison. I dont think your grow is the reason for you having high leckie bills. The whole country is suffering at the moment and trust me when I say there are worse affected than you. Dont hold back with your plans, go with the 400. Growing certainly makes you conscious of how much juice your consuming. I think you best leave that consumer unit as it is.

Im banking on independence at the referendum then ill be gettin power for peanuts. Safe in the knowledge we're selling our resources to the rest of the world. We can live in hope

Not to sure, my GF sorts it all out, when she's home I'll ask her and post back. From what I've heard SSE have worked out what we use and saaid its gonna be around £50 a month for leccy with them. The women on the phone did say we have a slighly higher consumer rate than the average household for during the day!!! ooops! My girfriend also said to the lady would plasma screens being using alot?, as we have 3. She recons that if you switch them off at the plug and dont leave them on standby, that it will save a considerable amount!? (cant see it myself). My GF probably thinks that i've only got a 50W bulb on my grow! lol

Yeah that was the show...what was really funny was that the electrician that worked on that house found out that a house he's renting out was in his name...so he freaks and changes it as he didn't want to be libel to a $30,000 fine, if some tenants start growing....

any options for alternative forms of electricity generation? Solar, wind, convection?
i thought of getting a waterbed again, and filling it with those wave power systems. that way i can power my dc fan every time i get laid...

Just done a bit of research, British gas charge 0.15p a KWh so....
    250W light on 16 hours a day * 30 days = 480 hours a month
    So 250W = .25Kw
Number of Hours *Power Usage = Number of KWhs used
    480*0.25=120

Number of KWhs used*Price per KWh=Monthly Cost
    120*£0.15=£18 a month for a 250W light

This is on top of what you already use/pay in your house!

It works out £28.80 for a 400W light. Expensive!!!!

    Still having second thoughts!
