Butane or Isopropyl

I don't know if this comes under growing.

I have always been of the opinion that oil made through supercritical fluid extraction / butane is better quality than that made with supercritical fluid extraction / isops. However, someone that I have been talking to has been saying that the isops is better quality and is therefore easier to sell. Additionally, they reckon that when one is smoking the butane oil that you are just putting the butane chemicals into your system. What is the better oil?

I say go with 180 proof 95% alcohol (Oregon State) and put 1-2 oz of bud + alcohol and wait 14-30 days, then evaporate alcohol slowly and there you go.

It is said that long contact time with the alcohol will extract chlorophyll as well as resin.

When you're talking about hash, I guarentee no one could tell the difference between the difference extraction methods unless they imparted a flavor. The ISO process is so easy which is what I'd recommend for you. Put your product in a jar with just enough ISO 90 to cover the product. Shake for 2 mins, then run through a cheese cloth. Maybe repeat the process one more time and again, collect the 'runnings' in a pie pan, preferable glass. Put in front of a fan and about 2 hours later, you have oil.

Triple distilled butane is what you want to use, like colibri. I believe king butane is a cheaper option for triple distilled butane in the USA. It yields a gorgeous honey oil, much nicer than any iso oil i've seen. Also less dangerous because butane is a gas at room temperature whereas iso evaporates around 80 celsius, so no hot plate required. Keep in mind butane is heavier than air (do it outside, away from sources of heat, spark or static).

If you insist on using iso, use 99.9% pure. Nothing less is acceptable as far as i'm considered. I've seen 99.9% at electronics/hobby stores for use as a contact cleaner. Be safe when heating it, the vapours are highly combustible.

I've smoked and tried both methods.

You would never see a butane brew oil cap here for sale, ever. Its always iso. Most often not even the first rince of the iso either....

For the iso - I would do as homebrewer says - basically fill a container with bud + iso - let it sit and run through all the weed for a minute or two then run through a pantyhose or something... this is where I would change method. I don't suggest anyone does this ever, you'll blow your hands/face/arms/everything to pieces.... You end up with green iso, which you need to "boil" down (apply mild heat) I do it on the electric stove top in a normal pot with windows open, and a fan or two blowing around... the green liquid will eventually bubble down and turn into a sticky brown/amber/gold mess you can spot. For a 2nd or 3rd brew you can run more iso through the same bud, the resulting oil will be more black and nasty, feels like you swallowed a plastic bag after you've smoked it.....

For butane, I would fill up a small coke bottle with bud, flip it upside down and poke a small hole in the top - run a can or two of pure butane through the bud and out the bottom through a coffee filter or something similar? again you end up with a green liquid - the butane evaporates off a lot quicker and easier than the iso, a glass bowl and a boiling water bath should be enough....

By far - my opinion - nicely done butane oil will be the best you've ever smoked.

I think butane is still the number 1 suggested way. Ive tried iso, acetone and butane and i cant actually say there is a significant difference.

Vector butane is 5x filtered which is as clean as you can get as a consumer. I use a ounce of the best purple ive had and came out with amazing results. Run it through a tube into a pyrex dish. The better the weed the better the oil. Comes out a golden honey color.

butane baby, pop your crude product on a plate and put a pot/cup of boiling water underneath it to help further evaporate the butane and collect. easy quick quality

Iso and tane are two very different solvents. So they will both have specific "qualities" and "downsides" as far as iso I highly recommend whole plant extractions and to evap and purge for a long period of time with a modest temp of 110 degrees Fahrenheit. It's essential to cook off and evaporate ALL the iso. Even with a vacuum you'll never be able to remove the chemical flavor of iso. If doe properly it's a very "clean" product. Better for very very large batches like in breaking bad.
Butane on the other hand is just a tad bit more complicated...but the better of qualities. To yield a connoisseur grade the process is really complicated. You need high thc yielding buds. Equipment. Scientific glass. Time. Patience. Skills gained from trial and error. Even before blasting your weed you need to start off with a high quality butane. Newport near Zero is the best non-medical grade butane in my opinion. Then you clean that butane further through a cold column process that traps lube oils from the butane can and any mystery material. Then you gotta run that through your material and collect the raw oil/butane mixture then transfer it to an evap table/pan with heat and vacuums. You want it to be about 1/8th inch in thickness for the cleanest purge. After purging it for a few days you flip it over and vac it for another week and you hve awesome prestine pure thc. Clear like glass and tasty. Low flavor profile from the Newport but very clean if you can tell.

You gotta find the extracts and concentrates forum. It's way down the list in the cafe part I think. Why they put it way down there, who knows.
