Budget pH test question

So I really don't want to fork out for an expensive pH meter. Will this product work to test the pH of organic soil? It looks like it's meant for liquids.

test solutions for soil are a real pain to use. you can get a cheap mechanical meter for $20 US that works fine. can;t help you with uk sources, however

Right, well I got one of those but it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Does the soil need to be really wet for it to work?

no. take it back and get it replaced
