hey RIU,
i just ordered me a new Buchner
i asked for the #5 (2~5 micron) filters
but i am a little confused if they are removable or if they are fixed in place?

also curious if anyone has used one to filter canna oil?
(coconut oil)

thanks in advance!

I'm not sure but I believe they are fixed. a sealed glass disc thing. A pain to clean. But a lot of people use them to filter their oil

ok thanks

i was hoping they were removable like the paper filters
if not, yeah that is going to be a pain in the ass to clean

my second part of the question regarding canna oil i meant cooking oils
(i don't know if that's what you were referring too)
i haven't heard of anyone using that small of a micron filter for that

Yea I noticed that after I posted lol
But I mean it should work fine, keep the oil hot obviously and make sure its prefiltered.

Is there a reason you want to filter that small for what I would assume is an edible?

I just ordered another after braking my spout, damn it! Tim's a cool cat but that damn boat takes forever.

Yes it is a fixed filter. I've been able to keep mine super clean relatively with ease. Don't ever let it dry out dirty. I leave it in the freezer until I clean. Definitely clean after every run though. I pour about an inch deep of everclear in the top and swish around rubbing with my fingertip. Don't scratch with fingernail. The glass filter is delicate. Pour that mess out. Then I run a lil everclear through it both ways. From top and then the bottom. Then I do the same with hot water. SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN CLEAN!

no reason just thinking of possible things I can filter
My buchner is a porcelain job and you just drop a filter paper on it.
yeah i seen those that's what made me thing they could be removeable
i will probably end up buying some of those as well

hopefully this wont be considered thread hijacking but i am curious to know what the advantage of a buchner funnel is over my straining my winterized solution through an unbleached coffee filter. I'm very interested in improving my technique wherever possible and this seems like an affordable modification - can someone please enlighten me?

^^i'm restraining myself..
It sounds like some sort of vac assisted filter with a particularly small pore size

a coffee filter is around 15-20 microns
the Buchner funnel has a built in glass .2 micron filter

basically the advantage is smaller particles are being cleaned out at a much faster rate than dripping through a coffee filter

you should get one

Filter 1000 mL in a couple minutes instead of much longer with gravity alone.

what one has .2??? please send link i would like to know i though the syringes only had .2 micron
the smallest one i have found is a 2-5 micron
i put a coffee in and i soak the filter in ever clear to stop the wicking of the oil up the filter, then pour my solution in and turn on the vac.

oh yea i do this all in the freezer that is full of dry ice with the door closed, so i make sure i maintain the extremely low temps that are required for the separation, well not required but i find it helps.

damn sorry bro
that is what I meant I got the 2-5
im used to those .2 syringes
my bad!

1# Coarse Filter:Filtration Pore Diameter is 80~120 Micron
2# Coarse Filter:Filtration Pore Diameter is 40~80 Micron
4# Coarse Filter:Filtration Pore Diameter is 5~15 Micron
5# Coarse Filter:Filtration Pore Diameter is 2~5 Micron
6# Coarse Filter:Filtration Pore Diameter is <2 Micron

but I guess the #6 would be the closest to the syringe filters

no no your good, i have the #5 as well, i think any smaller is over kill, unless your doing it with the syringe

I should correct that, Over kill with the vacuum assisted pump
