Bringing Out the PURPLE.....???

In seed catalogues there are often photo's of very purple strains.
Do these purple shades happen just by growing the plant?

Or is there a technique for provoking this outcome..?

It's part genetics and part colder temperatures which simulates autumn nights and triggers the plant to release anthocyanins (red colorings) thus making it purple.

Some plants will be capable of going purple due to colder temps, only some, and if conditions are right, and other plants can go purple regardless of temps (e.g heaths black rose, although that isn't purple, more pink, mine both male and female turned vibrant pink in 85-90 degree conditions)

VIBRANT PINK....!
That sounds fantastic!!!

I THOUGHT THIS THREAD HAD BEEN LOST, SO I POSTED ANOTHER VERSION OF IT.
NOW THERE'S TWO VERY SIMILAR THREADS.

Impressive bit of horticultural knowledge!
Maybe, one day, I'll have a head full of information like that....?

Some nice looking LA there :).

Btw, sorry to thread hijack: does anyone know if lavender strains actually turn purple? Im wondering BC in running some white lavender clones, they're like 3 weeks into flower and they smell JUST LIKE LAVENDER. I mean, it's really kind of amazing. I hear people talk about how bud tastes like this or smells like that, and usually when they go to show me, I'm like dude this just smells like weed.

It's like the cotton candy I'm growing (delicious seeds)- it's supposed to get pink hues and smell/taste like the real thing. I'm skeptical, we'll see what happens.

On my way to some nice purple I'm hoping. So far the Killing Fields is showing some nice purple flower traits. The leaves are where I first noticed the color. I had to get in real close with the camera to see the flowers are actually giving some purple as well. I've got the best of both worlds on this plant. Although this is growing indoors, the space it's in gets below 40f at night. That and the fact the Killing Fields is known to have a brilliant purple phenol-type in it's lineage should produce an awesome display.

Smells like....WEED!
I know EXACTLY what you mean.
When people go all 'WINE TASTING' on you and start to say "It's got that grapefruit smell...."
It never does, to me, ever!

I like the idea of a LAVENDAR smell
Vanilla, Cinnamon and Lavender are the 3 scents I quite like.

PURPLE SPROUTING BROCOLLI
Anyone know if it's a similar process that causes the purple to come out in Brocolli as it does in Purple strain Marijuana...???

You might not want to hear it, but wine testing is areal thing, so long as the wine is good. You'll rarely be able to tell shit from supermarket plonk, but get a decent bottle, and suddenly the charcoal, tobacco, chocolate, lyechee, strawberry etc, they are absolutely real. With regard to weed though, I can't argue, lavender that I got in dam about 7 years ago, is the only time I've ever had a strain that has resembled its namesake. I've had bubblegum and all those things, from taste to smell, I never experienced any of it, just smelt like different weed.

I agree with both of you. And yeah, this strain is from g-13 labs, my cousin grew out the mom and I was less than impressed. He had to harvest early tho, so maybe she just didn't get enough time to finish up right. And personally (sorry cuz, but its true) my shit always turns out way better than his, so I'm really expecting my clones to blow his shit away, even tho mine are soil and his was hydro.

About the broccoli-- maybe the same thing turns it purple (cold temps). My temps were getting into the low sixties at nighttime in my first run, and some purples started to baaaarely come out in my bubba kush, but not too much. I'm having slightly lower nighttime temps now that its winter, we'll see what happens. But yeah, my cousins had zero purple in it.

Btw, I grew out a regular white widow my first run also--smelled like STRAIGHT vanilla. You probably would've loved it, it really had a killer smell. Nowhere near as many trichs as it should've had (for a widow) but the smell was amazing.

The brightest, deepest most remarkable colors come from not giving up too easily or quickly.

from 7:36, interesting talk about leaves

sry for such a long response but i was just talking about this with someone so it was fresh on my mind and then i saw this thread...

sometimes taking a plant well into its later stages of flowering and going a couple extra days will help encourage a bit of color. :D its certainly a genetic thing too tho.

ive been having alot of luck with purple lately. i have a couple strains that are pretty much purple unless they are just not in good enough conditions to do so/stressed out/heat issues, etc.

so i think that shows genetics have alot do with a plant being "very" purple. almost all plants/strains/phenos can get a bit of purple-ish color. but ive had a few that just would NOT go purple at all too. recently my last "over the summer" grow thiis past year, i had everything turning all sorts of colors except a GHS Exodus Cheese. i was suprised, it just would not turn purple at all... no matter the length of flower or temp.

PH also plays into this. there is a great article on cannabis being purple/colored and how it works etc... i believe its in Cannabis Culture magazine form back around 2005-6. they point out the old VISC strain "Fucking Incredible" which tends to need a certain PH level to show color. it tended to be fully purple and even show pink calyxes on the live plants when it would be all fancy and nice. the damn ghs exo cheese even had almost all pink hairs on the live plant. unfortunately those pink pistils will turn brown/red/orange/blue/purple... whatever they will.

a LONG time back around 2001 or so i had some bud a friend grew. it was good stuff, no idea what strain. it was nicely cured and everything, but was only about a month old from picking it or so at the most at that time. i left the bud sitting out overnight by accident, outside of any container, with normal temps and humidity etc... if anything a bit warm and dry.

the hairs(pistils, whatever u want to call them) had started to turn a very very blue heavy purple-ish color. it was mostly on the tips of the top buds. very awesome tho... i ended up showing the person who gave it to me. they let some sit out, and it did the same. ive also seen other buds that were green with purple hairs. one batch was even some "regs" or "mids" that were exceptional. just amazing bud that happened to have purple hairs instead of orange/red/brown. gave me wicked munchies!! :D

so in summary i feel that;
1. a plant first has to have the genetics that allow purple to happen. some will have much more than others, some none at all.

2. the plant needs to be healthy... not that sick plants dont ever have color. some look crazy!! but sometimes a plant thats very likely to finish purple normally, wont do so simply due to it having such poor growing conditions or something negative causing it stress. for instance, sometimes the bottom buds on certain plants, which typically purple easily, wont have purple on some of the buds/leaves that didnt get much light. typically the resin will be lacking in those same areas. not always tho, but just something ive noticed myself. or sometimes PH plays into it heavily.

3. sometimes purple can be from stress but its usually not an attractive purple when its from heavy stress and issues.

4. each single seed/pheno of a strain can be totally different. i grew 2 grape ape seeds from the same batch. one was ZERO green, still very nice. the other was nearly 100% purple, and is hard NOT to get to turn purple. It typically shows purple from the first signs of flowering. in this strains case, u can stress it into turning back green too by not picking it in time. looks so weird when it happens too.

ive had a number of plants turned purple that were only bagseeds from "regs" or "brick-weed" sometimes those seeds can produce nice plants! :D

GL getting the purple u want folks! ive seen quite a few fully purple Sour Cherry plants which are by the Breeders Boutique. they also carry a deep purple/querkle hybrid too. mostly a purple urkel strain. Ive also seen a number of purple trainwreck, bubba, la affie/la confidential, lvpk strains and hybrids all over the place. the new DNA tangie hybrids have nice pics that show some pretty colors. i want to try some of those!! the banana og/bubble gum one too! might make an order soon if i can! :D

happy 2014 RIU!

wont let me edit... meant to say "one had ZERO purple" where its says ZERO green. hate when it wont let me edit for whatever reason. stay safe and warm everyone. very cold here. causing my La Con to show a bit of purple, mainly on its fan leaves. some redish autumn colors on a couple leaves even. might even be a deficiency helping cause the autumn like colors on a few bottom leaves. the plant is very healthy otherwise tho, so its kind of weird to me.

seems almost all la affie hybrids all tend to have the potential for purple. lot of nice pics of affie/con hybrids and pics of just the affie/con. very comparable to pre98 bubba kush.

the la affie is just like the "pre98 bubba" The bubba was pollenated by what is now being called "the krippy" by B real. it had hermied, creating seeds in the "pre98 bubba". These seeds created what we know as "pre98 bubba kush" "bubba" and "kush" are the REAL parents of pre 98 bubba kush. main article in a recent high times even...

my point... a ton of these bubba kush and affie/la con mixes are throwing purple in the mix with whatever they are being crossed with. i had some "alien bubba" recently... it was a very very dark color. and very very good too!! :D a ton of recent new "usa" strains are purple really... cookies and its hybrids, the tangie and its hybrids, LVPK and its hybrids, which Alien Kush is one of. swerve even made a "purple crack" im what added to the green crack to do so... There is a purple Trainwreck that is used by DNA for a couple things.
so there are quite a few new strains out there that could easily throw you some purple plants.

good luck getting purple folks! ill edit my post and give the issue # of that CC magazine that goes into detail about purple, if i can dig out my stash and find it. want to say the article was by "Kat"

The Chocolope I grew out definitely has an earthy warm chocolate coffee scent to it. The Cotton Candy I ran also has a sweet sugary candy smell. But I agree that more likely than not, it doesn't relate much to the name. I think a lot of time they are naming the strains after certain phenotype's. So there may be just one expression that has the "bubblegum" or whatever.

Also Ill have to post some pics of my Blueberry, Grand daddy purp, and The Purps I have growin now. They are only 3 weeks into flower, so no color yet but they should be very colorful here soon. With the cool winter nights I'm getting low temps in my basement which also grants me pretty bud. I dont like winter but I love winter grows. Low temps with lights on and just low enough at night.

I have found purple is both genetic, and also temperature related. Some won't change some will. But I have seen purple strains not change at all at high temps, but turn very purple with low temps (purple pineberry, the purps...)

Altering pH to provoke the purple could start to get complicated.

Soil and hydro need different pH levels anyway - so working out how far to push it would have to relate to 'normal' pH range (and that is based on soil or hydro growing....?)

I thought that maintaining a healthy pH range simply ensured that the plants could ingest a full range of nutrients...?
If pH is allowed to drift too far, in any direction, certain nutrient deficiencies are likely.

If this is the case then purpling that occurs due to pH manipulation must surely be a byproduct of a nute def???
