breeding strains with different harvest times and questions

so i have a quick question. if i were to breed a strain that finishes in mid/ late oct, with a strain that finishes in mid September. what would happen to there offsprings finish time? would it be met half way around late sept to early oct? or would i have to just grow them out and watch closely?

also for selective breeding what traits should i be looking for? do i back cross to bring out specific genes like taste and trichome production? ive bred before but i forgot most of the important information. :eyesmoke:

Expect a small % to finish mid Sept and a small % to finish late Oct. with the largest % somewhere in between.......but expect loads of varied finish times.

The important traits to look for are the ones that you care about the most.....everyone is different. I always look for early finish and heavy resin production. Others breed for taste, smell, plant structure, "high" quality, bug and mold resistance, and a bunch of other traits.

that's why it's called selective breeding... you pick the traits you want.

i always used to select the shortest flowering male to lower flowering times, but DJ shorts or subcool suggest the opposite, selecting a non-dominant male as recessive traits are where all the interesting flavors and buzzes come from. especially with hybrids, the afghani will want to dominate.

as you'll already be testing you females, at least, you should know which ones have the traits you like best. if you REALLY want to get serious though, test your males too. that's the only way to know what each brings to the mix. it's your grow, you're in charge, you get to decide what the ultimate plant is. tastes vary. if you look at the gear everyone grows, no two growers select the same strains. only you know what floats your boat. with ANY strain out there, there's someone who loves it, and someone else who hates it. your offspring should be a reflection of your tastes.

i'd suggest that instead of concentrating on brute force productivity and resin content, you look instead for QUALITY... a better buzz with more than one THC trait. (i'm hinting at how much i hate 1 dimensional stones... but that's me) select for flavors too. asfar as i'm concerned, a better tasting strain with a superior high is worth a little extra wait and a little lower yield. when a breeder selects for quality over quantity, people will recognize it when they smoke it.

oh, i forgot, here's links to the DJ shorts and subcool articles you should read

if either of those 2 breeders have anything to say about breeding, you should listen. it'll only take you a few minutes, and there's lots of unexpected info in there. i've decided i'm going to retire my sodium bulb, for instance, and run 2 halides in the future as full spectrum light brings out all of the complexities of flavor and possibly THC profiles too, and is especially beneficial for sativas which is where my interests are.

if anyone knows of any breeding tips by mr. nice, sannies/escobar, or DNA etc., those should be considered valuable too.

i try to help as best i can. glad it helped you. i just had to use the info to beatdown a troll that tried to call me a liar because i said someone's tallest amnesia pheno will be the sativa dominant one with the best high when if there really WERE a freakin' 3 foot tall plant that smokes just like columbian, thai, malawi & cambodian etc., people would be freakin' growing it everywhere. it's sad the depths that cash crapping liars will resort to to keep the truth suppressed in defense of their inferior schwag. please don't become one of them! thanks hazey! very informative posts!
Hazey might post a couple inks, but take what he says with a grain of salt. There's a reason hazey never shows anything but some veg plants in solo cups. He's kind of partial to burning his plants up before 5 weeks of flowering, either with a lighter and papers or with fertilizer.
