IIRC, in Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance Robert Pirsig cuts a shim from a pop can for his friend's BMW motorcycle. His friend is appalled that such a humble device could be used to perfect such a good example of German engineering. Germans are famous for their precision, Americans for making it work.
But proof is in performance, a pop-can needs to proove itself worthy of course.. To Pirsig the engineer who designed the BMW would have appreciated his use of the pop can. Although dedicated shims are available, his homemade shim is perfect, an essentially free part cut from a soft metal that will serve its intended purpose beautifully.

Now granted both of you are doing things as Persig did, but you are moreso IMO lacking things like PVC/hydroton etc.. Thing is, once you settle upon the necessary aeration stone, whether the Lava works, or you need to drop $4 at the pet store, I think yours will likely aerate better, and furthermore keep out more light..

I actually bastardized the AA credo to suit DIY activities..

Lord, grant me the tools and craftsmanship to DIY the things I can,
the funds to purchase the things I cannot,
And the wisdom to know the difference..

Edit: The book is a literal classic.. Its likely all over the torrent sites in pdf&audio format, and any bookstore that can't atleast order it should be ashamed of themselves..

lol i think ive heard this story one time in school thats a neat lil credo but yeah i tried the lava rock i need to get som glue to see if itll work rite if not its off to the pet store but knowing me i have an airstone its jus somewhere round here idk its a work in progress i'm gonna track down some good ole bag seeds so i can start from a seedling jus to see if this lil thing could support a plant and for how long

i also was thinking this mite be useful for revegging a mother plant during the winter... hmmm who knos

If you go buy Gorilla Glue, don't get that much, it doesn't have the best shelf life, and read the instructions, water helps it set/cure properly, and a LITTLE goes a long way..

yeah try ungluein your elbow from the table you were workin on its a bitch lol yeah stoner moment but yeah that stuff does wonders but this stuff called marine tex its a to part sealent and adhesive it smokes when you mix it and its as close as you can get to welding plastic, fiberglass, glass, basically anything without a huge machine kinda like jb weld but better lol

well i re did the net pot and filled with small size pieces of lava rocks and put it under to small cfls and a 12" flor maybe thatll help em root, the cutting died i didnt expect it to live so im messin with a lime tree cutting until my plants start flowering so i can get a good mature clone , i also brewed a batch of willow root hormone so that mite come in handy within the month so well see but im workin on building the verticle grow system and a lil bit bigger bubbler ( storage container, new pump and airstones, good nutes, and mediums) i was thinking maybe some of those fish rocks or something im doin some research on it first
