Homicides increased nearly 12% and nonfatal shootings were up 7% in Detroit last year compared with 2010, a source told the Free Press.


Detroit Police Department officials are expected to announce the official 2011 crime statistics at a news conference today.

The city had 344 homicides in 2011, excluding those considered justified, the source said -- up from 308 homicides in 2010. According to the source, there were 1,252 nonfatal shootings in 2011, compared with 1,170 in 2010.


Shootings, which account for the majority of the city's homicides, were closely watched last year after a particularly bloody weekend during the summer in which 15 people were shot, seven fatally.

The city also had several shootings with multiple victims, including one during an eighth-grade graduation party and others at two high school reunions.
Among the high-profile shootings last year was the death of 3-year-old Aarie Berry, who was fatally struck by a bullet that pierced the front window of her family's apartment after a daylong dispute among people in the neighborhood. A suspect is currently awaiting trial in her death.
Already this year, at least 32 people have been injured by gunfire and 10 have been killed, according to Detroit police crime summaries and information obtained by the Free Press.

December 14, 2011 – Albany New York – A local New York State resident, Franny Trokerns was arrested early this morning after being turned in by her babysitter. She works as a dancer at a local strip bar and apparently during a night of heavy drinking she allowed her on-and-off-again boyfriend Derrek Honsteads (a tattoo artist) to tattoo her 9 month old baby!

(Newser) – It appears that our friends from Down Under are in fact up higher than North Americans—a new study shows that Australians and New Zealanders are the world's top pot smokers, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Lancet found that 15% of Aussies and Kiwis ages 15-64 used some form of marijuana in 2009, as opposed to 11% of North Americans, and just 2.5% of people in Asia.

Australians and New Zealanders also are the top users of amphetamines.

“Just look at the way we take alcohol as an integral part of everyday life. I think a lot of young people see cannabis in the same way that we see alcohol: as no big deal, as a drug just to use to have a good time,” said one of the study's researchers. The study also found that up to 203 million people around the world use marijuana annually, compared to up to 56 million who use amphetamines and 21 million who use cocaine or opiates such as heroin.

This little guy may only be one inch long and weighs only 3 grams but before his poison sac was removed he killed four entire families (129 people) in the mountains of Iceland. From birth these little creatures have enough venom in one bite to kill four humans. They have a small needle sharp injector under their tongue and death comes in under 30 seconds through complete paralysis of the nervous system
