Bird attack or insect attack?

My plant was flowering nicely that was until last week.
This was how it was looking

as seen... its quite healthy and nicely budding along with trichomes
However I was out of town for a couple of days so wasn't there to look after the plant.
But when I returned my plant was completely ravaged and broken...leaves eaten up...buds broken.
Basically looked like someone attacked the plant with a vengeance last night. (It was an outdoor grow so I had it placed in the balcony) But nobody had harmed the plant throughout and just one night I don't happen to be there and this happens

Looking at it...I had no other option than to chop up whatever was left and start curing it.
However there were several small black particles near the pot when I first saw it destroyed and also same particles on several branches..as if a swarm of insects infested it overnight.
I still don't know what caused this attack and haven't spotted any beehive or anything that might have caused it...if anyone else might have encountered this please let me know
