Yes they are designed to grow beneficial bacterial colonies in a sump filter for a saltwater fish tank. They Are vey pourous and does the same thing that live rock rubble does for sump filter. The live rock rubble can be compared to hydroton, so if I'm not mistaken, they may work. Just one problem (may or may not be, i know personally know Jack Shyt about hydro) they are extra light-weight and tend to float around a bit. But hey, this can be you "secret" technique that makes your girls stand out.

Seems like around 2010 everyone was making a big deal about these bioballs and switching to them because supposedly they were so much better and less hassel but now it seems everyone or most everyone is right back to hydroton. Am I correct? I don't see anyone using these or recommending them anymore. 6 years ago everyone was saying these would eliminate hydroton all together, I dont see them in my local hydro shop at all. Just rockwool and hydroton. Oh and Coco Coir.
