I am growing in a foothill region with very dense forest surrounding my house. Despite the fact that i fenced in my garden area I have been plagued by a seemingly impossible pest, mice. These mice started off by just eating the stem connecting the leaves to the branches, an annoyance but nothing too drastic. Within days they had removed about 1/4 of the leaves off of a very short but dense variety, in conjuction with eating the fibrous "bark" surrounging the stalk about half way up the plant. Despite losing this "bark" around the entire stalk in about 4 in. long section the plant has survived, but the yield will be severely compromised. I have attempted every means of mice eradication offered to the consumer; three differnent kinds of poison(Decon, Just On Bite, and another edible kind) with ZERO results (i dont think they even touched them), i have set borders of glue and snap traps around the plants catching three mice with the glue traps at first, but after two days of use it seems they have been jumping onto the lower branches or hopping the glue trap border. I even attempted to provide food and water for them by placing corn and seeds out...no dice, they wouldnt touch it. They have now begun removing whole immature flowers off a differnt plant and eating the stalk half way up of a third plant that is over 8 feet. I have attempted to locate their nests but no luck there either. In short I am loosing the battle. I am begging anyone that has experienced these or similar problems to please offer some help; this garden is medicine for some very sick people and I'm watching it all go to shit in front of me. Thank you for reading and please help if you can...by the way i have ferile cats all over my property that havent done a damn thing, so I think the feline approach isnt the answer.

shitty deal, try spreading cat hair in the garden,or harness a cat up so he has to stay near the plants! i don't know,I've had mice eat the stalk of my plants to.i put a tin can around the stalk and filled it with soil.the damaged stalk had tons of roots growing out of it in to the soil in the tin can try that.

It seems you've created a mutant breed of mice that crave your bud, Bud.
Geeze, it sure seems like commercial products would be able to help you. Have you tried hiring a pied-piper?

But seriously, if none of the stuff available is doing jack shit and your feril catz won't help, I don't know what to say but good luck. I'd try to find their home(s) and maybe then try flooding them out.
Or maybe I'd remove any growth they could jump to and try an stop their access up the main stalk . . . I'd be pissed if I had to do this.
I can't fathom them not going for proven removal practices. Oh well, they're bound to eventually end up too stoned to run very well, so maybe just whack 'em with a shovel or step on them?

I feel for ya . . . this IS a tough one.
Good Luck

you sure it isn't snails doing the damage? Rats normally only hit plants that have gone to seed. Snails will eat all your plants, leaving only a bare stem on starters...

I've got some problem with grass hoppers! Neon green ones with red eyes! I've been waiting till dark to grab em and jar em up for my turtle. They come out at night and eat fan leaves! My plants are budding up at the moment and I won't use any kind of pesticide except my eyes and fingers! Are you sure it's mice? Look for grass hoppers they can do the same dammage.

Put some buckets around and fill them 3/4 of the way full. Smear peanut butter around the inside of the bucket above the water. Mice climb in the buckets to get the peanut butter but they will drown.
