An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Here’s a new health-related adage to consider: Regular consumption of marijuana keeps you thin and active.

According to researchers at Oregon Health and Science University, people who use marijuana more than five times per month have a lower body mass index (BMI) than people who do not marijuana.

    The researchers concluded:

“Heavy users of cannabis had a lower mean BMI compared to that of never users, with a mean BMI being 26.7 kg/m in heavy users and 28.4 kg/m in never users.”

The study also suggested that people who consume marijuana on a regular basis are more physically activity than those that use it sporadically or not at all.

Of course, this is not the first time scientific studies have reached this conclusion:

A study published last year in the Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics suggests that regular consumers of cannabis have a lower BMI than those who do not use the drug.

A 2013 study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that cannabis consumers have 16 percent lower levels of fasting insulin and 17 percent lower insulin resistance levels than non-users. The research found “significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences.”

And data published in British Medical Journal in 2012 reported that cannabis consumers had a lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes and a lower risk of contracting the disease than did those with no history of cannabis consumption.

In the 2016 study, lead author Isabelle C. Beulaygue from the University of Miami concluded:

“There is a popular belief that people who consume marijuana have the munchies, and so [THEY]are going to eat a lot and gain weight, and we found that it is not necessarily the case.”

Researchers have not identified the reason behind the findings. But some suggest that those who consume cannabis regularly may be able to more easily break down blood sugar, which may help prevent weight gain.

I get this ASSUMPTION and QUESTION all the time too

“There is a popular belief that people who consume marijuana have the munchies, and so [THEY]are going to eat a lot and gain weight, and we found that it is not necessarily the case.”

uhuh! (:

maybe at first, but if you smoke weed long enough, you can use it to suppress hunger just as well as to get an appetite.

Munchies is another story. Ever noticed how sensitive our simple plants are to even minor problems with nutrients.
Malformed leaves, lesions, dead spots etc.... Ever though how badly the shit we eat is messing us up, or just the results of missing essential and minor nutrients?

since i started consuming cannabis I dropped to about 185 lbs from around 235, work out multiple times a week and eat way more healthy with a varied diet. For years I let myself slowly go through complacency and shitty diet. I wish I had access to this stuff when i was younger and an athlete. It would have made muscle soreness and recuperation faster.

This year current I'm 175 lbs.. down from 220 to 240 which I have been for my whole life and and every one of my doctors has questioned my weight loss...asking me If I'm feeling alright...
all I could tell them was...My spine was in agony...and I weighed 240... fentanyl became the devil ,at least in the media...and I had to be taken off that
but I at least could function a somewhat normal life...working from home and building a house, etc....ice-fishing in the winter,,, golf was out as the spine is pouched for good anyways which is a sad reality...but I digress
I'm some how suppose to live as a chronic pain patient, in Canada now...when under new rules...we all have to see a chronic pain specialist
and everyone ...yes everyone... will be brought to a reduced opiate load egual to 90 mg morphine... total period.
MEDS
used to wear a 50 mcg fent patch for my back pain switched out every 48 hours..but according to the calculator
equal to the 50mcg patch = would be 180 to 220 mg oxy daily...
I was titrated off the fentanyl patch over a couple of months and put on 20mg oxy twice daily and 2 percocet , and brought up to 3x20mg 2-perc's
which is about 25 percent of the equal dose to the patch....... the pain clinic took over and right away dropped me back down to 20mg x2times a day
I can see what their end game is...

So before I go any further this alone has added 12 doctor appointments to my already full dance card....and there was the weekly trips to markham
to the pain clinic... all winter... while I received, injections of freezing into my spine, around 40 injections total, frankly, I was loosing count...
had epidurals scheduled did one...and got a head ache the lasted more than a week....and not a fun one..
there were also, monthly appointments with my gp ,to be prescribed opiates...12 more appointments, every 3 month endro chron guy for diabetes
yearly eye doc and heart doc 6 months ...I have also to fit in neurologist and 3 others in rotation.... oh and now carpal tunnel guys too...
so something like 30 doctor visits....in a year....

I GIVE I GIVE
I dropped the weight because it seems losing weight by eating less...was one of the only things I could control myself...
less weight = less pain ...I wish I could lose another 25....lbs...
I could care less about eating pills...and would trade them for the patch any day....at least I could function
the college needs to also be chastised for making blanket medication rules...
that was not thought thru...and they are the smart ones

Cholesterol you say...mine was 2 last year so I stopped taking some of the meds...
last month I'm back to somewhere between 7.5 and 15 but they were not sure how high since the tri-glicerides were off the scale...
Heart doc called yesterday...I qualified for cholesterol meds by injection...now...

I also have problems in my lower spine, got tired of being fucked around and financially drained.
Found a good neurosurgeon, now I simply have the nerves cut once a year in a quick procedure called a rhizotomy.
I don't even take general anaesthetic for the procedure, used to pain. It stops all those shooting pains you get down your legs and takes 70% out of the bit of what it is left.

Because of this, I am also very inactive, yet I don't get fat. I burn food using my brain.

they were talking "ablation therapy "where they burn the nerves with liquid nitrogen...with a guided needle

I have chronic pain caused by a degenerative bone disease and end-stage osteoarthritis. It took until I was talking about suicide for them to do anything, but they only wanted to treat the depression and not the pain that was causing it. I'm half-way through a 12 year wait to go on a waiting list for knee replacement. They had no problem handing out anti-depressants but they wouldn't treat the pain that was causing the depression. The fact that I had had a problem with booze in my history, meant that they would not prescribe pain medication. Their answer was 1 tylonal 3 without codeine per day. That's about the time I stopped going to doctors. They have no right to decide that I should live in pain or be addicted to ssri's. Fuck all doctors...I
