Sorry to hear about your loss. Lets all say a prayer for the fallen ones.

I would have tried to hide them better. Tents are good for this.

But I can understand, I wouldn't want a fire marshall whose probably friends with cops to see anything suspicious.

You should check your state laws, most land lords must give you at least 48 hours notice before they can enter your property/apartment. it is the tenants choice to allow them in earlier then that. They may not like it, but it is your right. Just a tip for next time.
