automotive led bulbs converted to a grow light

i would put 400 watts of good cobs up against any 600 watt hps out there. the targetted spectrum more than makes up for the difference in raw output, and less juice used = less heat to deal with. that means less exhaust needed and a more stable environment in your tent
The second 400watt cobs outgrows the modern spectrum 600watt hps's im pretty sure hps will become redundant.

Now either led growers know some secret the rest of us growers dont or this news has yet to break in the weed world.

Good info, thanks.

why don't you go look around the led forums and see what kind of results they're getting. you may be right if we're talking about big grow with ten or more lights, but on a smaller level, with one to four lights, i don't think you are right.
i'd like to see your documentation that growers are using twice the wattage in cobs to equal an h.i.d.'s results

That claim came from the top growers on the led forums and was substantiated by their documented grows. One particular thread called leds and organics which pops up here now and again uses the 'twice the led to hps' rule with amazing effect in his 2000watt flower room.

I have no personal attachment to hps, simply want the most grams per watt in my grow per cycle. If leds produced more yeild than hps then why is this not common knowledge and been proved outright in all the comparative grows. If growers proved it no one would argue the point and that is the crux of the matter.

i hereby volunteer...if one of our wonderful member advertiser will hook me up with a 400 watt cob i'll document a grow against a 400 watt hps, or even a 600 watt hps....:D

No need to, its been done and documented many times, even led makers have scaled back their crazy claims over the years.

Heres the thread i was on about, also some good techniques for homemade led units...

I could very easily beat this with a 1000 watt open hood hps I would smack the shit out of it . not impressive at all looks to be 1500 watts of power being used . . https://www.rollitup.org/t/organics-and-leds.844672/
Leds are great for growing no doubt about it, im impressed by their tech and the grows they produce but not in comparison to hps. Part of me really wants an led unit but i cant break from hps till they do outgrow them.

Pretty tempted to smash a porshe in and steal some led units after this thread though.

I dont know why most led bulbs are marketed with such hype, the best growers are still using twice the amount of led wattage to equal hps/mh. As for comparing led to t5/t8 there is no way their true lumens per watt equal that of a t5 let alone a t8.

You can dabble all you want with leds but watt for watt they are still some distance off conventional growlights.
At first I thought this thread was from 5 years ago or something but when I saw it was current I was slightly shocked. There are literally hundreds of grow journals/threads on RIU of HPS growers who have switched to using LED cobs because they are far more efficient. They use less watts at the wall to grow the same amount of bud because less of the power is converted to heat. Typically, cob growers use 2/3's the wattage in cobs that they used to use with HPS. People who used 600w HPS use about 400w of cobs to get the same yields. They also save alot of money on cooling their grow area.

There is no comparison really, LED cobs get the same yield as HPS using less power. The vast majority also notice an increase in the quality of the bud also. It only takes a few minutes of surfing the grow journals to find out the truth.

It is now 2022. It's funny reading through this post almost several years after it was posted. LEDs have clearly taken over the growing industry. Both large scale and recreational growers have realized the amount of money one can save with LEDs is insane. Advantages don't stop with just saving money... LEDs are less labor intensive and easier to maintain. Heat and temperature suddenly become an afterthought which in turn lightens up the need for a high dollar exhaust setup. LEDs are most definitely "The Bees Knees"! Back in 2016 when this post originated, LEDs were just beginning to get good. Growers that have been doing it for 30 years who have mastered their craft so to speak were hesitant to make the switch. Especially those who depended on their crop for household income. The phrase "If it's not broke then don't fix it" is a hard lesson to give up when the technique you have perfected produces incredible results that your customers have come to depend on and appreciate. In 2016, recreational growers were using LEDS with exceptional results. They were growing good, high quality pot and pulling respectable yields that almost rivaled their HPS grows. The benefits were certainly there, but it would take a few brave large scale, well known growers to fully take the leap and make the switch for the industry to fully recognize the benefits of LEDs. On a large scale, the ups of growing with a 100% LED operation come around full circle within the first grow. From maintenance and cost to yield and quality... The benefits are extraordinary and are easily noticed because of the scale and size of the grow. This doesn't mean that HPS and other older lighting mediums are obsolete. If you are having success with your HPS grows and you enjoy using this method then by all means do not throw away your expensive setup and buy all new equipment. Do whatever it is that you love to do and don't let anyone else tell you different. There's nothing I hate more than a grower telling another grower they are stupid for not using LEDs or vice versa. Especially if the other grower produces exceptional product. Aside from recreational growers, I do believe that HPS and other old lighting mediums will eventually become extinct. It may already be that way. I can't tell you the last time I saw a large scale HPS operation or grow. Oh well... As long as Canabis doesn't become extinct I'll be OK!
