Auto flowering mating

I wonder how the Breeders do it? I would love to have a better insight on how to keep the Auto flowerin Traits strong through generations.
That would be good to know. Right now my plan is to cross back to my first generation seeds every 2 or 3 generations. As far as crossing an auto to a full sized plant, my idea was to create a plant that auto flowered but had a longer more vigorous veg period.
This would be for outdoor growing in my specific situation. It would be ideal for me to have a 4 month auto as opposed to a 2 month auto. But I'm starting to think that may not be possible.Have to look at it at a different angle maybe?

IslandGreenGuy if you cross the full size F2's you should end up with 25% autoflowering and then if you cross two of those, you will have 100%. Since One is dominant and the autoflowering recessive ie (FF X ff) your offspring are all (Ff) which means that autoflowering trait is present but recessive (unexpresed). When you cross these (Ff X Ff) you will end up with 50% Ff 25% FF and 25% ff the latyter are the true in bred autoflowering plants that you desire and if crossed will produce all auto seeds.

when you say 25%, do you mean of every plant will have 25% autoflowering traits or 25% of the seeds birthed will be autoflowering plants? Because 25% of a plant is not an Autoflowring plant.
You can only autoflower if it's 100%.

I wish it were that simple. I've been crossing these things for some time now, and cant seem to get any solid results. I have crossed auto flowering plants with autoflowering plant, the first generation is usually autoflowering plants. Then crossing those offspring with each other will produce many Autoflowering plants (but some larger plants that dont' autoflower) Crossing those offspring will cause most of the plants to be Full size plants (with few Autoflowering plants. Cross those offspring and you get mainly entire full size plants.

I wish What you said was true, but it's not. If you continue to breed the offspring of Auto flowring strains with each other, you will breed out the Auto flowering trait within 3 generations. Every time.

^^^I second that motion!!! I read this thread , very interested in breeding Auto's. I'm just breeding full size for now.I'm wondering if I should just keep doing the same way,
but with Autos

I order 10 seeds , pop 5 of those(keep the other 5 for original seed stock), I pick the best male/female and breed um. My last breeding I got about 200 seeds. Once all those run out I go back to original seeds. I keep pretty consistant size/yeild since it's only been imbred one time. Any advice would be much appreciatted!!!:weed:

Sooo..... why dont you if you want a lot of seeds just seed as many as you can and when you run out of them get some more seeds and do it again... idk

Ya I meant 25% of the plants would be 100% auto, but what you said is interesting. I would just try and stray from inbreeding that far... fifth generation ect. Why don't you keep the pollen from an F2 and use that on the subsequent generations? Is there a reason you are crossing so many times?

Now I just breed one generation, I get a few hunderd seeds. If I need any more parents, Ill order some. Plus, we are already getting second generation when we order.. I have a collection of pollen from auto blueberry, Auto AK, NY diesel, white Widow..ect. I hate even opening the containers. I try not to often.

"The first cross, F1, will not produce any AF's at all since it's not a dominant trait.
The second cross, F1 x F1 = F2, will result in about 25% of the F2's being AF's.

If you want to make a cross that carries more of the traits from the strain that's not an AF,
you may want to neglect the backcrossing part in my earlier post. If you backcross it you will get
more of the AF genes in the cross and the outcome, F2, will be around 50% AF.
The downside is that you probably will get a pretty small plant with more
of the lowryder genes in it. That's not in any way bad, if that's what you want.

So, if you want more of the other strains characteristics, instead of the backcross
you grow the seeds from your first cross, the F1's.(AF x non AF = F1)
In the first cross you will not get any AF's at all so take your time and grow a couple of plants and
pick out the plants that carries the traits you're looking for (smell, yield, resin production etc etc) and breed them.

In the next generation, F2 (F1 x F1 = F2), around 25% of the outcome will be AF's.
In the F2's you will also find the biggest genetic variations, you will se a lot of
different phenotypes so it's a good thing if you have many plants to choose from.
You choose the one's that are AF's and carry the traits you want and then you breed them.

F2 x F2 = F3. This generation will be 100% AF.
If you're happy with what you've got at this point, your breeding project is over.
But you can always continue on like this, fine tuning it until you've got a strain as stable as
the ones the seedbanks sell and maybe start a business of your own. :wink:"

Thanks CF. Very nice explaination, that even I can understand. So in your opinion, you either get the autoflowering trait or you don't? There is no inbetween as in crossing a tall plant w/ a short plant and getting a result of a medium plant?

I'm not sure I'm following you. What exactly do you mean?

That the autoflower trait is either present or it isn't and that there is no such thing as an inbetween 10 week auto flower and fully photosensitive plant. I was hoping that a 16 week auto could be developed for outdoor use.

they flower in a couple of weeks, just pick the ones that flower fast and breed them, if that's what you meant?

The offspring would probably consist of both small and bigger plants and probably anything in between,
just continue your breeding with plants that's got the size and other traits you're looking for.
This is a lot easier if you got a lot of plants to choose from, preferably a 100 plants or more if
you got enough space.

So if I had this theoretical 4 month autoflower, and it was a month old when I put it out in April it would be done in July, and I and could have staggered harvests throughout the grow season. Which would enable me to split up the trimming and drying, which can be overwelming when it all finishes at the same time. It also would be much stealthier to harvest while the surrounding vegatation is still green, in some situations. So in your opinion is this type of 4 month autoflower possible. I can't find any info on anyone trying this.

Yep, it's possible.
Depending on your selections through the breeding,
you could get it to finish even faster if you wanted to, no problem.
