is the use of supplements absolutely necessary outside of the use of (what i believe to be) good nutrients. and if so, at what stages is it most needed, and what types have been known to be the most successful?

You should google ask lucas marijuana, and find the ask lucas thread he goes over this in detail and his jist is if you are using the correct nutes, additives are a waste of time... just his opinion but after reading his thread it makes alot of sense and the thread has tons of useful info check it out.

Well, I've grown a lot of hydro crops using only basic nutrients, and it will work just fine for you. You can grow good healthy plants.

I believe you will do better with some additives, though. Basic hydro nutrients will work for primary metabolic processes of the plant, and additives will aid the secondary processes that enhance the production of resin compounds like flavanoids and terpenes that add to the taste and aroma. These are the things that happen naturally in soil, and may be lacking in some hydro-grown plants.

A vitamin/hormone supplement, like SuperThrive
A kelp supplement, like Floralicious Plus
Enzyme supplement
PK Booster, last half of flowering, like Kool Bloom
