Does the first set of leaves (above the cotyledons) count as a node, even though they "died out"?
Yes, many people will disagree but I've seen many start counting by the first set of leaves that follow the cotyledons and kept their plants short. No need to start when their 10 feet tall. You can pinch, clip or snip off the tallest shoots or the freshest shoots. Cut the branch stem just below the last fully developed node,. The plant starts developing branches at the remaining nodes. This is a good techniques to keep a plant short and bushy. Or you can develop many top colas instead of just one. Don't top a plant more than twice and never top when it is in the flowering stage.Bending Marijuana - Carefully pull down the branches of your cannabis plant, or the whole plant, tie them down. You are now forcing them to grow horizontally. The nodes will start producing branches or buds that grow straight up. Bending should be done gradually to avoid pinching or snapping the stem. Use soft hemp string or cloth to secure the branch or stem loosely when tying down to minimize damage to the soft stems. Growth is slowed for awhile as the cannabis plant adjusts to the shock of being bent. This is a good technique to maximize space in a small grow room.

Nice info! The plan is to mainline the 4 girls due to limited room in tent, they're on their 6-7th node (counting the fallen first node). Now when they say "top down to the third node" do I count the fallen first set as well? The stem would look really short imo, would it still be ok?

You should top your plant anytime between when the 2nd & 5th set of leaves develop. Every plant strain reacts differently to topping, so when first starting off with a new strain, or if you have never topped a plant before, experiment. MIGHT SOUND STUPID OR CRAZY, but I know people who practiced on regular yard plants/weeds that would resemble the closest to thier cannabis stems/branches. Try topping at different times, and different quantities.
You should top your plant sometime after the 2nd to 3rd set of leaves develop. This is from the bottom counting upward , is what I've been told. :peace: Sorry, I tried to find a drawing illustrating this showing a plant with only 3 nodes... but hell, you know how it is, when you want something - you can't find crap.... I did find a pic on the net which is attached... Good Luck Bro. :mrgreen:g.jpg
