Alternative to building a scrubber.. holmes air purifier fortified with carbon

So my clones are creating quite a stink already. Smell has been my only obstacle in my mini grow. There are lots of ways to build a scrubber, but none I really liked. I recently purchased a small room air purifier from target for $34 similar to this one. http://www.target.com/p/holmes-hepa-mini-tower-air-purifier-black/-/A-13021386#prodSlot=medium_1_18
It has a hepa filter and ionizer. I decided why not strap this to my grow box since it's got a powerful 3 speed fan and a filter. It works very well.

It uses mini cartridge filters. The filter I had was for pet smells and really wasn't quite doing the job. I cut apart the filter to find it's just some kind of carbon pad and a thin prefilter. All I had to do was separate the two layers and add about half an inch or so of activated carbon. Then I just put it all back together and it's all good. The fan is not struggling and the airflow is excellent.

I just wanted to throw this out there for anyone else that is struggling with odors. They also make a $15 machine that might also work.Walmart has them. I just think the filters they sell aren't ideal for our cause so they need some beefing up.

This one might work well because of the shape. Easy to cut a hole in your box and duct tape it to create the seal.. http://www.target.com/p/holmes-table-top-air-purifier/-/A-12331975?reco=Rec|pdp|12331975|ClickCP|item_page.vertical_1&lnk=Rec|pdp|ClickCP|item_page.vertical_1

Here is the filter mine uses. Just gently cut 3 sides of the thin top layer and peel it back, you'll see the 2 filter pads inside. Just layer between them with a nice layer of charcoal. Once reassembled the carbon stays in place very well. http://www.target.com/p/holmes-hapf30as-u4-aer1-smoke-grabber-filter/-/A-14201298#prodSlot=medium_1_21

I can't see why this wouldn't work for all small grows.
Any questions just let me know.

Hey man! I have a 4x4 closet that I am setting up.. I do not have the ability to cut in to the ceiling or walls.. So I am looking to make what you are describing here.. What is your experience with "beefed up air filters"? Will it keep the odor down?

ozone gen
http://www.amazon.com/New-Comfort-Purifier-Remover-Generator/dp/B00FQS78Z6

ozone attaches to the smell and kills it ........like the hospital .....only down side is the ozone kills Co2 lvls

that is a unit u can use in the room ......but u still need to cycle the air in the grow area ......if u are not able to get a carbon filter in there then u need 8 or 10 or 12 inch ducting that way u can add a ozone gen into the duct(they sell those units too ) it will add ozone into the ducting so when it dumps out no smell to it other then ozone

it works great i cut up a hp in a room 20 mins after the ozone was kicked on could not smell a thing i had ppl over and they could not tell i just did something like that if they did would of asked me for freebes

I have two air purifiers with ionizer. I'll look for the filters and see if I can "beef" them up. They'd be perfect for my second flower room instead of buying another carbon filter. Interesting thread.

When you get into flower those filters won't cut it, I tried every possible short cut when I started my first small grow back in the days. All I did was waste money on cheep filters like the one you have, eventually the smell will creep around.

If it were me and I were doing it again I would just invest in a small can filter/fan combo and save the hassle.

Also watch out with those ozone generators, if you go that route. They are very dangerous to run in occupied spaces and should only be used for clearing smells while the house is unoccupied (for example running the ozone after harvest l, while you take the dogs on a walk, to clear smells would be ok. Running ozone constantly to kill grow smells while you live in the same house, will do some serious damage to your body). Just something to think about

Have you gotten a chance to try this? I'm really interested in ordering some purifiers and doing the same thing!

question- what is the purpose people use these carbon/charcoal filters? smell reduction only? i'm a new grower and am curious because where i'm growing i don't have to worry about that issue. thanks!

To filter Odor out exhaust... And/Or filter intake so as to keep contaminants out of the grow (cross polination between rooms, etc)
