Alaska LED Build & Grow

Hello fellow growers,

Well I finally find myself in the RIU forum to connect and learn from you all. OK I will give you the low down on where my operation is currently then I can get into where it's going. Currently I have 3 Mars hydro 300. 1 in my tent 2 in bud space. I'm 2 weeks into growing some white widow, AK49, and Tutenkomen. The ladies are doing good, yet I want better for them. I started look into upgrading to Advanced Platinum lights and stumbled into DIY lighting.

So thanks to Supra, Growmau5, Greengenes and others information. It's time to pull the trigger on my diy project. Keep in mind it's subject to change, but I do want to build this light before bud on the current grow.
12 cree Cxb3590 4k 72v
4 HLG-240h-c1400b
36" x 6.008 heatsink
8 fans
4 apv-12-12 driver
Then odds and ends ect
The only thing I struggling with is deciding on a driver for 3w led diodes. Through work they gave me 2500 of these things all colors mixed in a box so I would like to incorporate some of these since they were free. If someone could tell me if they know what these marking mean that would help. Until then I guess I will start hooking them up to determine color. Lol
Have a great day, and happy growing.

Welcome to diy. I'm amazed at what 16 cxb3590's will do.
Thank you, I can't wait to see what they will do. I'm actually considering putting 4 3590s on a 36" stick and upgrading the driver.

Sell those diode of ebay. They will only complicate your build. Just do a basic light, you will be blown away.
I seriously considered just selling them but I just can't help wanting to use them.

At the end of the day I just want this light to give my father's room a run for its money.

Like I said the build being subject to change. Its now-
16- CXB 3590 4k 36v
4- HLG-240h-c1400b
Its irritating, I haven't changed my mind on something this much in a few years.

Can you put up a few images, I might be able to identify them?
Cheers

Those 1400s can run 5 3590's. I mean you can run just 4, but I don't see why you bought those ones? I'd have done the 1750B versions, and dimmed to 1400 ma's if that's what you want to run them at.

I see your point, I was trying to build 4 light bars without building a "driver box" but doing that would save me on 1 HLG. And I like the 1750B idea, gives access to more current. Even if I don't use it, it's nice to know it there. Thanks for the advise.

OK so I just bought the 1750B's so they are locked in with the heatsinks, all the odds & ends. Now just need Jerry from kingBrite to get back to me on my inquiry for the cobs, holders, and lens. I really don't want to pay a extra $15 per cob from mouser.

Yeah, more like $20 more.... or you could pay $100/ec on amazon? :P jk.
Definitely wait for jerry or get them from Cutter? I don't see why you're making yourself wait. They've (mark @welight ) got great prices too.
Where'd you order your 1750bs from? We're they in stock?

How big is your tent and are you sure you want to drive your 72v cobs @ 1,4Amps? That's 104w per Cob and 1250w all together! Such amount of power is enough for 2m². And the cobs only running at 43% eff.
You should decide to use the 36v cobs with a 1,4A driver to get at least 56% eff., in this case you need only 3 HLG-185h-c1400. 12 CXB3590 36v @1,4A will give you more than 1500μmol/m² total in a squaremeter tent and ø1000 in a 4x4 tent.

I have 2 8x8 spaces and a 4x4 mother tent...I'm currently only using my tent and half of one 8x8. I did decide to go with the 36v instead, I guess 2 times the intensity with half the cobs was attractive. The whole efficiency part still slightly escapes me. So 56% is referring to photon penetration to the plant or is it referring to 56% of potential used is going to light made?

Well there is 2 reasons I am even in led. First it's one of the fastest moving technology in grow lights, it's seems to be moving much faster the plasma and much cheaper yet. I also like the DIY approach because I can customize a high quality light for half the price. Second my Father has been growing here in Alaska for 30 years, He is a die hard hps guy. So it's we will see how this showdown turns out.

Yepp, 56% eff. is light output, 44% is heat!
OK, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Mouser isn't in stock.
Got to thank you again for the connections with faster suppliers.
So I'm going to test 2 panels then dive in to building the rest to fill the other space.
So on order and will be here in 2 weeks.
8- cxb 3590 4k 36v - cutter
2- HLG-240h-C1750B-straight road electic
2-Apv12-12- straight road electic
4- 120mm cool master fans- newegg
2- 6.080 heatsinks - heatsink usa
2- 100k potentiometers- amazon
1- ac power cord- amazon
2- ac c14 male-amazon
2- ac c13 female-amazon
Other odds and ends like thermal paste and screws and wire I have.
In the meantime I'm going to jump on my lumber mill and build a proper raised floor for my space.
