Advice needed scrog?

My setup, a homebuilt box 60 inches tall (5ft) by 44 inches wide(4ft) by 22 inches deep. Ive got 3 fans, an intake an exhaust and a circulation fan. A carbon filter for smell, but thats besides the point. Im one week along... and not sure what to do...
This is my firstgrow...
I am planning on using a Screen. I wasnt sure what would be best...
This is where I need advice....
I have a 400 watt MH/HPS MH for veg HPS flower.
SHould I use the screen to stretch out the branches so they recieve light, Top them and flower below the screen
OR
Veg until Ive tucked and weaved most of the screen up..??
Help?

Im not the biggest expert on the matter but i believe it really depends on the strain and how much it stretches. I would say flower once your branches start coming through the screen because most plants will stretch a lot in flower. Depending on how much space you are working with you can top and train below the screen before flower to get a wider canopy with less plants.

Doing a ScrOG can be difficult if you don’t know the characteristics of your strain. First off, I hope you have females growing (from clones or feminized seeds), you don’t want to have to pull a male out of a screen.

Your main concern in your box will be controlling height. YOU DO NOT WANT TO FILL UP THE SCREEN BEFORE YOU FLIP TO 12/12, you will be fucked if you do in my opinion. You will continue filling up the screen for up to 3 weeks after you flip, while the plant is going through the stretch phase, basically until true buds start forming. Since you don’t know how much your strain will stretch, I would recommend filling up the screen about 50% and then flip and continue filling the screen until buds start forming.

You didn’t say how many plants you are growing, fewer plants mean more topping before you reach the screen, more plants mean less.

You didn’t say how much grow height you have (the height between the top of the pot and the max height the plant can grow without getting burned by the lights) but with a 5’ high box and 400 watt light I’m guessing about 2’. I would recommend setting your screen somewhere around 8 - 10” from the bottom of the plant. You don’t want to run out of height.

Make sure you have good air flow in there, the screen will get dense and the plants will be more susceptible to insects and mold.

Ya i got 4 in there.. that helps.. thanks... i got shiva skunk and blue dream? does anyone know how they like to stretch? Also, after i transfered them into their new containers, they were clones, the edges of the leaves are yellwing/ what loooks like burning.
I have a premix grow formula, rainbow mix, i mixed in, and i did not put to much.
Im thinking i might mix a little bloom there their next feedeing just to give them more nutrients but idk what the problem is
Yellowing and edges kinda dropping down?
anyone help?

Are you in NorCal? The NorCal Blue Dream is a real stretcher, at least 3 times bigger when you switch to 12/12. You'll need to be careful with this one.

Don't know about Shiva Skunk.

Yellowing and edges drooping, could be overwatering but can't be sure.

thanks man... that helps... but idk if its overwatering cus its been prettty smooth i can tell when its dry i poke my finger in the soil. Maybe it was just the transplant shock.. but now im not thinking so..
recently i noticed the leaves becoming more droopy, and also i noticed 2 yellow tiny spots on one of the leaves... what could this be???

so the tips are still yellow and bottom leaves kinda yellow as well. not fully yellow. Also near the top but not at the top, there are a few spots on the plants. idk what this is. i dont see any bugs and its only on like 2 fan leaves. I also dont feel like the plant is thriving how big are they suppose to be after a weeek and a half. they were clones i transplanted.
I was thinking maybe to add some more nutrient a little bit of bloom even though they are in veg.
I added rainbox mix grow to the soil so i thought it shud b good. but idk. thanks

i have a gut feeling that mixing strains in 1 SCRoG would be bad
for a start you wont know which is which, but 1 will stretch more than the other for sure
as an aside i grow a dutch passion Euforia which still stretches 5 weeks after you turn to 12/12, and gets to 5x its final veg height and mass.
some strains really can just keep on trucking after you start the flower phase.

I've thought of this before. How is this done? My idea was to bend the plant over and put chicken wire over them and let the shoots grow throught. Is that the jist of it?

thats exactly it... you just keep everything but the nodes/buds beneath the screen. It creates a field of buds, with the nodes or buds through each 2x3 hole. ALso creates a canopy and spreads out the plant for the most light you can get. Its very efficient. And i can tell which plant is which the leaves are quite different. The shiva skunk plants are wider leaved than the blue dream. But thanks

couldnt you just set up 4 small scrog sections..instead of the one big screen where everything will get all tangled up and whatnot...??

keep everything seperated but still the same scrog setup basically

what do you mean>? If we are on the same page and im thinking about what ur talking about then i could but it would be hard to seperate the screens and still have them strong, they need to b strong to suport pressure from the plant pushing against it. Right now its one screen and its stapled down tight with a staple gun on the edges.

What I did was veg 3 plants under a T5.
Two of them I topped and the third one I did the 4 cola technique as taught by Uncle Ben: https://www.rollitup.org/advanced-marijuana-cultivation/151706-uncle-bens-topping-technique-get.html I veged them until they were the desired height, basically tall enough to just poke through my home made screen. I've grown this plant normal before so I knew how much it would stretch during flower. Once I put them in flower they stretched but I was only able to fill the screen about 65% which is fine I was more worried about over filling it. The stands 15" tall and 9" over the top of the pots. I wanted some room under the screen to pump fresh air in and room to get my hands in for watering. I cut ANY growth under the screen so the plant devotes all development to the canopy. I realize now if I'd put the screen a little lower i'd have filled out the screen more but you live and you learn.

Check out some pics of my scrog below. Pictures are of week 5 flowering some bagseed sativa.

looking great man.

Just like that man, bend the branches out to farther holes as they grow and you will be growing sog

I wouldn't suggest mixing varieties until you have tried it a couple of times, but it can be done, I do it all the time.

The way I do it is that I screen it close to the bottom, and let it fill in until it's over 50% or so, then I let it grow another 16" or so, whenever it starts to get really uneven again, and then add a second screen. This time I fill 100% (or I try) of the holes, and flower as soon as the new screen is full. Any side branches that aren't used are cut along the way, and everything is kept well trimmed.

Once nice thing about it is that topping on the first screen doubles the bud sites, but topping on the second screen just makes the plant shorter.

At the end, I get 120-132 nice sized buds from a 2'x3' space with a 400 watt hps. I can get in six plants and end with bottom stems the size of my thumb.

Now it does have a couple of drawbacks...
1) It is labor intensive. I use it for relaxation, kinda like bonzai. Way too much work if that part isn't a way you have fun.

2) It adds a long time to the veg cycle.

So just to be clear, what I am talking about is basically SCROG->Lollypop (except to finish filling)->SCROG.

Works a champ for me, but like I said, I enjoy the gardening part.

I haven't seen anyone else write about this method, but its so simple I am sure I'm not the first to try.

Couple things to watch for:
Be generous in filling the first screen. The first time I did it, I thought 25% would be a good starting place for the first screen, but 60%-ish seems to be the best for the varieties I am growing.

Don't even think about trying this if your closet doesn't have ventilation, I haven't had any trouble with rot, but it packs a lot in a small space.

If I remember, I'll try to take a pic of my current grow, and post. Right now they are just starting to reach the second screen, so there isn't much to see yet, so it may be a while.

My light is vented, so I can put it very close to the plants, keep in mind that the whole point is to keep the shortest branch in enough light while keeping the tallest branch from getting too hot from the light. By SCROGging you even out the tops. By trimming-lollypopishly, you keep it under control (otherwise LOOKOUT), and then you SCROG to even out the tops for flowering.
