Dear Dudes and Dudets,
Sorry to repost this as a separate thread but I got no reply when posted under another thread that I will not mention here as it suddenly turned into a testosterone fueled d**k contest... kinda sad.
Anyhow here we go:
I am on a DIY quest to put together several LED light using on each 3x CXA2530 and most probably a Mean Well ELG-100-C700B (if Jerry finds them...).
Should I go passive cooling, what size heatsink would be appropriate? What if I go active?
Another point to take into consideration is that I come from a land far far away where heatsinkusa (or for that matter no other proper heatsink seller) deliver their products. If the heatsins you suggest can be sourced on alibaba or ebay, it would be marvelous.
I got one of these and they look good http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/Special-offer-100x41x8mm-Aluminum-HeatSink-radiator-Heat-Sink-Dense-tooth/32303771103.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000017.2.gA4nKo
might be a bit small, am not sure. would one per CXA2530 work? or one for all 3 cxa2530?

Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
yours truely,
Mazer

check out mechatronix heatsinks as seen in jorge's citizen thread. they come in all kinds of sizes (micro/mini/mega/giga/etc).

those drivers are easy to find domestically... time jerry ships them it would prob be a wash on any savings

https://octopart.com/search?q=ELG-100-C700B
Thanks Bobby. I already found the driver . and Jerry is working up a quote with shipping for me as we speak.
I am really having a hard time sizing the heatsinks.
any suggestions?

Hi Mazar
If it makes you feel any better, im in a similar boat! Have you seen what fasttech have? Something like this? https://www.fasttech.com/p/1348405. I did have these on order but it was listed as "restocking" and was holding the order up so i cancelled it. I doubt 3 cobs on there would work, but 2 plus a cpu fan to heat the whole unit might work...?
If you click in the model box you get a drop down menu with all the heatsinks they have. I'll probably use these plus a small 50x50mm cpu fan per cob: https://www.fasttech.com/products/1173709 but obviously then youre building totally separate units.
Keep us updated if you find anything interesting!

A few lens reflectors for bike lights but nothing for what we're up to! I'll probably get 4 of these, one for each 2530: http://www.leddna.com/10w-aluminium-heatsink-for-high-power-led-bulb/
90mm diameter so fairly large compared to the led but they appear to have large surface area and fingers crossed it should be enough without needing active cooling. It does say its suitable for 10 - 30w leds though specs from these kinda retailers is always a bit iffy as im sure you know...
But im seriously making this up as i go along. Growmau5, Will and JG have been incredibly helpful on my thread regarding basic electrics and light building, but so far I have zero experience and im working on a trial and error basis. I see lots of the pin type heatsinks but they're always kinda pricey...
Cheers!

That does look like a good design for a grow light heat sink, lots of vertical air flow across the fins and not very high like many other types. If the holes are right, it should be a good choice. Since you're using smaller COBs than most people, you have a wider choice of thermal management options.

I would much prefer something like this http://www.leddna.com/40cm-400x120x20mm-aluminum-heat-sink-for-35-40pcs-3w-led-power-transistor/

the size of the heatsink will allow you to spread the leds enough and it will require less work to move up/down the light.
I just purchased off of ebay a cheapo 7$ 30w led+driver to get my hands dirty. I had a tiny little heatsink 100x40x8mm, thermal paste and kapton tape purchased previously and waiting for the good stuff. I solder (like a one armed armadillo) the parts together and turned it for very breif instant on and BWOY OH BWOY!!! I was blinded for link 5mn. these babies are ridiculously bright! I can not imagine the amount of light 3590 and the stronger leds emit! SO BE CAREFUL with your retina...

Dionysus, I had that on order but it was "restocking" - they couldnt tell me when they'd be getting restocked.
Mazer, may or may not be of interest to you but i found these at a good price and only €7.50 shipping to the country i live in (mainland Europe).

Have you decided what you're gonna use?
Shiva, item looks good. Unfortunately no more to sell. did you buy any?
Latest update on my end: I found a aluminum manufacturer who is willing to sell directly to me if I buy multiple item... I am going passive with a 400x120x27mm HS for (5)x CXA2530 driven @ 500ma. I am on the overkill end of the rainbow but better be safe than sad...
