Hello all, Im an 18 y/o Canadian boy living in bc. First off I have had back pain/ depression/ anxiety for 5 years. I am interested in my medical card. I have been smoking for a few years and cannabis has worked wonders for both my mental and physical pain. The problem is my parents are againsted it. They don't want me to get arrested or laced etc.. they are blinded by propaganda but still very supportive of me. I have tried about a year of physiotherapy to help my pain, but it has only doubled in the last year. I have tried a variety of opiates not prescribed, they work but I know I'll abuse them and they only help with calming my muscles, not my mind. I don't want to be on xanax, oxy, ssri for the rest of my life. My question is how do I go about getting my card without my parents full support? And Im looking for tips on how to get my doctor to give me my card, I've heard its rather challenging here for someone so young. I've also heard its worth it to drive to vancouver to get a doc to give me my card. I hope there's someone else similar in age in Canada that has gone through the prosses that can walk me through it. I have other questions but I'll leave it at that for now. Thanks for your time.

Hey, sorry to hear about your situation.

First off I want to say congratulations for not falling into the pharma trap, and looking for healthier, natural ways to help with your pain, depression ansd anxiety.

Next I would say educate yourself. Read anything and everything you can about cannabis, cannabinoids, and the endocannabiniod system. This way, when it comes time to talk to your family or your doctor, you can properly articulate your points by reciting fact and science.

Now, your 18 years old, so you no longer need your parents consent, your an adult now. You and you alone can decide on how you want to treat yourself. And if you decide that cannabis is the best course of treatment for you; the most effective, least amount of side effects etc. Than you have the right to use cannabis for medical purposes. The trick is to find a doctor who is willing to sign you up.

Unfortunately the 2 medical programs in Canada, the MMAR and MMPR, are both up in the air right now. There will be a new program rolled out in August and it will require everyone who's in either of the 2 existing programs to sign up to this new one. I wouldn't bother trying to get a doctor's signature untill the new program is out.

I'm rambling and loosing my train of thought, but I hope this helps you in some way.

Wow really, I've been doing a bit of research and I haven't heard anything of this new program. Learning that fact alone made this post worth it. I guess there's no point in talking about mmar/mmpr then but thanks.

If you look up the Allard case, you should find something about the new program. Basically a judge has ruled that the MMPR is unconstitutional, and has given the government 6 months (until August) to come up with a new medical program.

I would spend that time getting your ducks in a row, talking to your family and doctor about your intent to use cannabis as a medicine, rather than poisoning yourself with opiates.

Hey Willerd, ...Welcome. I am a 53 year old Canadian boy living in BC...and my parents still don't understand or want to discuss cannabis! Good for you for seeking out ways to manage your pain without being on opiates. Getting your doc, or any doc, to sign is going to be the biggest hurdle, especially for young patients, but with some research and perseverance it's very possible. I would take pkhydro's advice and educate yourself on how cannabis helps you and why, as well as be able to recite the dangers and side effects of opiates vs. the relative safety of cannabis. Maybe even keep a journal documenting when you used cannabis vs. pills and the relief/effects of each. That is something you can use to show your doc that you are serious about your decision. Most doctors will know less than the average patient about the medical benefits of cannabis.
We don't know what will transpire in August, but I'm guessing getting doctor's approval won't change, so I would start the process now. Once you feel you have the information to talk to your doctor, make the Dr. appt. without your parents knowledge. The doctor can not discuss anything you talk about with your parents, if that is a worry. You may have to shop around for a supportive doc, connecting with others in your area on forums like this can point you to a mmj friendly one. I live in a smaller community and finding a doc was near impossible, so I used a clinic in Vancouver via Skype. It cost about $400, so you need to weigh that, but it was worth it for me.
In the meantime, be discreet with your use...you don't need to be the victim of a bored cop and an obsolete law....you belong to the demographic they target...

Welcome to the forum young fella. Lots of good info here. As stated above already.
Don't sign up to the LP system...it's a rip off and schwaggy bug popped forced trash.
Buy BM for now ( black market )

I wasn't planning on buying from the lp system, I was lucky enough to befriend a older dispensary owner/medical patient that sells me top self for dirt cheap. That's what peaked my interest and sent me here. I made a appointment with the doc, if its update worthy I'll come back and fill you guys in. Thanks again.

It's going to be difficult finding a doc to sign. Not impossible but the current guidelines suggest not prescribing to people under age 25. Good luck finding a compassionate doc.

Willard,
I can not help you or advise on your MMPR/ MMAR, but a question.

What have you been diagnosed with? This is the first step. You sound like you have all the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis. Which is always misdiagnosed or missed. There are certain days that I would not wish this desease on my worst enemy.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ankylosing-spondylitis/basics/definition/con-20019766

Not trying to scare you or be a google doctor, but understanding what you have first is important. Please ask your doctor to have you tested for ankylosing.

I went from competing as a athlete at the Worlds to shutting myself off from the world. Cannabis saved my life. Don't even start on opiates and Remicade.

If you want to PM me, I can help you with lifestyle changes that made a huge difference to me. Diet, strains, methods of consumption and exercises that help not hurt. Be careful of physio, before I was diagnosed properly, they almost put me in a wheelchair. Physio is great if properly diagnosed.

If I am wrong or overstepping my boundaries, I apologize.

Take care, pain free.

some will give you a card if you have "confirmation of diagnosis" so you don't need the DR's OK

Little confused as the link you posted doesn't say anything about depresison or anxiety.
Edit: when I Google it nothing comes up regarding depression/anxiety
Thanks for the concern but don't want to get into diagnosing, it doesn't matter exactly what I have, I want my card either way

If you do a google search on Ankylosin and go to the sites that specifically deal with It, you will see depression and anxiety, I think more due to the pain. There are videos of people talking about their depression.

Again not trying to diagnose you just pass on info.
