A Noob's Backlog of Grows and Dreams of Glory

After lurking since I joined in September, I decided to step out of the shadows and offer a noob’s insight. I shall call it my GreenThumb Evolution. I just received my 2nd order of beans in the mail, and since my purchase, I realized that there were not many first had accounts of the strains that I ordered. I hope I can help shed some light on these strains. I figured I should at least introduce myself to the other people out there and fill you in on my experience. Also, I’m a lifelong head.

I did my first grow in college and did not start another crop until this past fall. The wife said if it’s cheaper than the streets then pull the trigger big boy. Below you will find a brief description of all of my previous grows thus far. I will try to be brief yet thorough. (Wow I just read what I wrote and it sounds really dry! Please feel free to comment, ask questions, and whatever else comes to mind!)

Grow #1 - 2005 - Bag seed, 250w HPS with batwing, MG Soil and Nutes, done on a college kids budget. My room mates puppy destroyed at week 6 of flower, but I learned a lot. I learned the basic logistics of a grow and grow room set up and the importance of a padlock. Yield was only a zone or so from 3 plants, but hey it smokes when you do not know any better!

Grow #2 - September 2012 - Ordered from Attitude and order arrived in 10 days to SE US.

175W Mini-sunburst MH, Large clay pots, MG Soil and MG Nutes, DIY Grow box made of MDF and 2x2’s. 22x24x52” CPU fan and USB fan for venting. Lined with Tin Foil HA. Seeds were 10/10.

First try, DB and WW x1, seeds germed, then fried with MH.
Second try WW and DB. Overwatered the Pineapple Gum as sprout. Then Fried. harvested in 72 days, yielded 2.5 oz. Had to use supplemental CFL during flower. No Idea PH.

I learned: Never under estimate the power of a MH. It can/will kill your plants. Never use clay pots.; They are Heavy. Patience is a virtue. No matter the urge, wait a day to water when you feel the urge. Do not go poking around in the soil. It will come up. If nothing in 10 days, then you can rummage. Finally, GO BIG OR GO HOME.

Grow #3(Current Grow) - 12/6/13 - I McGuiver’d this one.

First I had to create a bigger space, so I took a metal kitchen rack (http://www.wirerack.org/wireracks/chromeplatedsteelkitchenrack.html) that the previous owner left in the tool shed and made a much larger tent. I took the shelves, doubled them up and attached with bolts to make the top and bottom. I took the extra shelf and made a storage shelf at the top for wires/cords, gauges and other items related to the grow. I then, like I was giving my wife a refrigerator as a gift, I wrapped in Panda Film and created a door with an Ebay zipper. I also acquired a 600w MH/HPS digital/dimming ballast with an inline cooling hood. Finally got some FF Happy Frog and FF Trio Nutes in plastic 5Gal pots. Using a homemade filter(not carbon, smell is no issue)with Vent set-up being Filter>CPU Fan mounted inline>hood>CPU Fan>Exit. RH hovers around 35% with temps ranging from 81-65F. All in all I spent 35$ making the tent since I already had the rack, fans, and other supplies. This can be done with a wooden frame, as I have since used the remaining pieces to cover my first tent, and removed the MDF sides. I now have a veg and flower tent!

Only problem thus far is me killing all my damn sprouts! I think I’ve finally figured this out. I’ve been practicing with some brick garbage seeds while I waited on my new beans. Patience, Patience, Patience…I popped the remaining seeds(all the freebies, White Russian, and last DB. Only the DB, Cheese, Hippie Killer, and Silver Kush survived =( So a new problem arises…what to do with the Auto when I flip to 12/12?

Been a non eventful grow with the 4 that survived. Cheese and SK grew to nice heights(around my knee and I’m 6’) DB grew to be, well it is an Auto, and the the HK…well its weird. I noticed it was really short when compared to the others, I’m thinking what a small phono, then I give it its first flushing at week three and I see it…the main trunk has a loop in it! I think the name for it is J-Root, but not sure. I believe this is a direct result of the root tip being pointed upwards when placed in soil from the paper towel. Good thing is it survived, albeit really short, but its going to be a good producer due to the ‘gangsta’ lean or LST that the loop naturally provided =) I LST’d parts of it to help encourage more shoots to pop upward. Only downside is there a noticeable height difference between plants.

I flipped the cycle to 12/12 from 18/6 and switched to bulb to HPS on Jan. 7. Plants were topped 8 days prior to light change. All have recovered nicely. Stretching is minimal at this point. Expecting to harvest first half of March.

I learned: I think I have spider mites. I know kill them NAOW! I honestly am only diagnosing this based on tiny spots on the leaves. it appears on old and new growth, but is centered on the lower older growth. I still am yet to get a microscope, so I don’t have a def. diagnosis. But I took precautionary measures and tried a Hot Shot No Pest Strip. So far it hasn't spread to the newer leaves, so I’ll try again in few days to kill the hatchings. Mix your soil with Pearlite, especially if its the $$ kind. Not only will it improve drainage, but it will help stretch your soil. It gets expensive buying 30G of potting soil. Again, be patient. Do not mess with your seedlings too much! I promise they get bigger in time =)

Upcoming Grows - Who knows…I forget….This is the order I received today. If you recall I began by discussing the lack of logs for several varieties that I purchased. I plan on documenting the grows and updating this periodically with more pictures. I do however have Hughesnet out here in the sticks so it’s sometimes hard to upload pics, but I’ll do my best. Yes I bought all the seeds with Freebies. Also for Herbies I give a Stealth +1 and Creativity +1. This order was 164 USD. I plan on doing a perpetual garden as I dropped the AK and Mighty Grape this afternoon. Ill move to Paper Towel when cracked and eventually follow same procedure as grow #3.

Man, I read your log, enjoyed it too. I don't know if you are still at it but I bet you are coz in this short journal you showed a lot of resourcefulness and drive to keep going, through the few setbacks and failures you did have.
Kudos and thanks a lot for sharing. I'm not exactly familiar with any of those particular selections really (though familiar with some of the breeders) but it's interesting to read about the choices you made and how most of them did (or did not) 'pan out.'
Thanks again!
