A grow for science!!!! Yard dirt and tap water!!

....well.... I burned a leaf. Ive never done that before, and its still a baby. Not sure if its gunna make it.

The light (13w Cfl) was apparently too close.

I got 3 more bulbs, 2x 13w and 1x 12w cfl. I am going to separate the plants and add these other lights as soon as i have fixture for them.

The large pot will continue on with the two in it. Each peatpot with multiple plants will be separated. Some may go outside the rest will be switched to 12/12 thursday.

Does anyone know how the age of them will effect how long until they show sex?

Ive never flipped a plant this early.

Aside from the burn, they all seem to be happy having the light closer.
Hopefully the stretch will be less extreme.

You could go super ghetto on the reflectors by using an aluminum tray or pie plate to make a reflector. ( they look sad but some guys do it )

Flipping to 12 and 12 tomorrow as well as separating the peat cups.

Im gunna drop a few seedlings in my yard just to see what happens too.

I put a screw in the side of the pot today and used fishingline to tie the stem of one of the plants to it. This plant has the most strech, and i figure it might help it support its weight, as well as make it easier to lst later. I will tie down every new node on this plant to hinder all vertical growth from this point on.

This should help make the most out of my lights. This plant will be trained to grow very short, i doubt it will even be over 10" at its highest point. The goal here, is to make as many tops as possible with the shortest plant possible. Given the growing conditions i doubt it will get big anyway

I have grown some basil under a cfl and the reflector you are using.
My experience is that a plant gets to a point where it needs more but can't get it. At that point it will atrophy and will fade out. This happens outside, inside, natural light, artificial light, nutes, no nutes....it is a living organism that is trying to get from being a seed to making seed. If it can't get what it needs it will just die but not without trying first.

You are on the right track with your endeavor to show what that looks like.

Well, im actually quite hopeful that they will finish. Im going to try to keep em alive, just trying to do so with minimal expenses and work.

Im hanging 3 more lights today. They will all be 13w CFL. This will more than double the light they are getting now.

I separated the peatcup that had 3 plants into another pot (yard dirt medium)

At this point i have 2 peatcups left that will be moved outside probably today.

I know some dickheads don't get it but noobs be like "I can't afford lights, I can't do hydro, I can't figure out nutes, I can't figure out soil..."

Anyway im thinking about topping super early. Whats the earliest you have topped?
Im thinking after the 3rd node.

I topped the tallest plant. After a few days to observe its response, i may top the others too.

Im really hoping this one is a girl.

Anyway last night they got there 1st dark period. I set it as 18/6 until i make up my mind on further topping.


Also, the smallest plant, who seems to be stunted is not getting white spots and seems very unhealthy. No signs of growth over the past few days, but the spots dont seem to be getting worse... Ill keep an eye on her.

Also is another pic of another quite healthy plant despite the growing conditions.

The new pot is dry as a bone and will get water after i post this. The first pot is still moist.

So out of the people following this, how many are surprised the plants are still alive?

Any ideas on why the one plant is not growing and looks sick?

must be heat or something, not sure fellow but my plants are in cheap soil, 40watts of light and there all looking great no problems at all.

Just moved the two remaining peat pot plants outside. Planted them both directly in the ground, one in an old garden that is no longer kept, the other in a spot that used to be over run with weeds. Both places will get full sun, but i dont really expect them to survive. The old garden soil may be suitable, there are still some perennial flowers that pop up, as well as some shrubs. Fr this point forward i will pay these plants almost no attention so that i don't draw attention to them in my yard.

I may buy a small bush or two to plant near one of them to help provide cover. Depends on how big it gets. My guess is that they will not survive, but if they do i will top the shit out of them and tie down as much as possible to prevent them from being noticed.

Update!!!

So, there are 9.plants left. Of those 9 i have a pot with 4, a pot with 3, and two outside planted directly in the ground.

The outdoor plants both will get full sun, and i will let nature take its course for feeding and watering them. One of them has developed some sort of slimey black spot on its leaves. The other seems okay.

The plant i topped is recovering nicely. New growth starting to emerge.

The pot with the 3 plants seems like growth is very slow. They have less light than the other pot, and the dirt seems less healthy.

Still on 18/6 cycle, and water when its dry one knuckle deep.

The one plant that seemed to be sick in pot #1 (4 plant pot) is looking better. I moved the light further away and it seems happy about it. Not really sure why the heat was such a problem though because the lights weren't that close to it to begin with and the others were fine.

The size diffrences between the plants in pot #1 are kinda baffling.

These were grown with just water, dirt and the sun. A little bit of MG to start the garden, but thats it.

As you can see this one is doing well after topping.

So i separated all the plants . there are now some in yard dirt and some in some cheap topsoil i bought at "ollies bargain outlet"

Alot of them clearly are growing slower than they should. I have 3 that i feel like are growing well. One is the one i topped, the another is the one youll see in the white pot. It has its first 5 speared leaf set and is showing new growth daily.

The last one that is doing "well" is growing slower, but is still growing and im considering killing the rest or moving them outside and just using these 3.

They all got a healthy drink of water yesterday and still have been given no nutes.

The 2 outdoor plants are both still alive, but one is really looking rough. This morning is was laying down on the ground. I pushed some soil around the stem to support it and gave it some water. The other one seems fine. They both get full sun. I did "supercrop" the main stem of the healthy outdoor plant.

Also, the new growth from the topped plant is looking strange. Im letting it go for now to observe.

I just watered with some diluted peroxide. I saw some gnats.... Fuck that.

They probably came from the yard dirt.

there not really a problem mate, 1" of sand and slightly underwater the plants

As i said, the dirt was taken from an old garden that is no longer maintained. At one point it was decent topsoil, but that was at least 7 years ago. My mom died in 2008 and nobody touched the gardens since.

Also, a couple of them are in cheap topsoil as a "control"

The shrubs in this photo are the area the dirt was taken from.

Good to know. What are the odds that that is the reason some of the plants are not growing? Gnat larva eat roots right? So that could easily be the cause of the stunted growth.
