a couple important questions....

ok, ive got a 3.5'x3.2'x3' tall area, would a 400W HPS or a 600W HPS be the best for this area?, ventilation is not really a problem, as much as electricity cost and old wiring in my house is, i was thinking a 400W but then ive heard people say 1000W for a 4x4 area...i just dont know, i wanted to get a 400w with a glass lens so i can do a sort of micro, bushy, sog grow, like i said, if temps arent a prob, but electricity is, should i just go with the 400W HPS? i want the biggest yield possible, and i know 600 would do that, but the cost and cost of kw/hr is just to much i think, i just want to know if 400W HPS is good enough for a 3.5x3.5' area, if it will sufficently cover it. and another thing about cloning....ive started my plants from seeds and want to clone them, i do not have feminized seeds, and ive heard that you can only tell the sex of a plant after it goes into flowering, which is the WORST time to clone it. so how do i tell that the clone i take is a female? i dont want to clone a bunch of shit and them be all males....so is there a sort of pre-flower stage in the vegetative stage? if so please show me some pictures, and let me know how long before flowering i can see the sex. since the clones are best takin in the veg stage. and one more thing, like i said i have a bloombox 3x3x3 with a 400 or 600W hps, probably the 400W, and i plan on building a clonebox with the 2-rubbermaid containers stacked up and a spot cut out in the top for light, or sides if i use CFLS...so if i have about 2.5'x2'x3.5' tall, what lights should i use, should i get 2 125W CFL's (not equiv. the actual 125W CFL, or should i get 2 200W CFL's (that is actual wattage, not equiv to inc.) or just get a 250W MH, or get a 150W MH? what would be best for this as i am going to flower them under a 400W HPS...lemme know what you all would do! peace and love RIU! and keep on tokin!:bigjoint:

Me, I'd CFL it. If you go with something that powerful in that size, you'll be putting a lot of effort into cooling, too. Hell.. half your space will be cooling!

With regards to cloning, you cannot be certain if it's female without flowering. Since I'm beginning a long term, multi-strain, 2 PC case, CFL, perpetual, I've got 2 plants under 5500 CFLs for veg. My plan is to top as soon as I can, using the top as a clone. The clone will become my new mother and I'll flower the topped plant. If the topped plant turns out male, I will probably kill off both (or flower and save pollen - not likely). Since this is a slow process, I might be able to flower and reveg quicker.. a process I started yesterday! :)
