Just like the tittle says. Ill be growing inside of a 50 gallon barrel. I've got a few friends that wanna grow but don't have much room and are afraid to do more than a single plant. So I came up with an idea to use these barrels I have to many of.
After cutting the door out the plastic warped, so I framed the inside of the door with wood. The lights made the barrel glow like a lantern. Then I sprayed an adhesive to the inside and stuck reflective Mylar to it, keeping most of the light trapped in. Now all that's left is getting a closed loop exhaust system set up to keep the smell down. Any cheap ideas on this? I'll be using an Apollo led 185w light on top with 4 t5s running down the side.

LMAO this is badass haha! Ya i agree, one plant, keep it short like topping it and LST'ing it. Mayb seal up that door a little better so there is less light leak. Then you could decorate the outside with various beer labels etc and put it in the man cave as a table stand with a glass top and add some 2 bar stools? haha start selling them to your friends.

I'd be wary of the light height as well. It's surprising how far led lights have to be from the plants to prevent burning!

Here is the catch. If light can be emitted from within the barrel outside of it, then light from outside the barrel can surely leak its way through to the insides of the barrel. This would surely throw your plant's light schedule off. No matter where you put it, a closet or in the basement, you should consider applying some sort of coating to the barrel that would either reflect the foreign light or defuse it. I believe black would be better suited as most grow tents are black on the outside, despite the fact that the color black absorbs/defuses light, while white reflects it.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong. Otherwise, I like the craftsmanship and ingenuity that you've displayed for us. 8-)

Sorry for not responding sooner. It's not completely done yet, I do plan on going around the edge of the door with something to block the rest of the light. Then gonna paint the outside. The led can also be raised right into the top of the barrel.

The only problem that I've experienced in the past when raising LEDs is that eventually you hit a limit, whether it's the lifting chains or whatever. I've never had to situate my LED unit's top surface to a flat surface, such as a ceiling. Your a smart guy/gal if you made it this far with your project, so you would eventually (or already) understand that air has to be able to reach through the fans of the LED lights in order to maintain ideal running temperatures for the LEDs.

In short, leave no less than half an inch of space between your LED roofing and the ceiling of your barrel of life.
