Hello,

I have a 600 watt non-dimmable ballast and I just acquired a 400 watt bulb. Would it be possible to put it in my ballast, and if yes, would it be any good to use for propagation or would it be too powerful?

Thank you.

Agreed, back when i was a super duper noob, i orderd a 400 watt light, the sent a 1k ballast, i started it up and the bulb would try to start, but wouldnt stay lit and burnt out. l returned the ballast and they sent me a new bulb and the corect ballast. In hind sight i shoulda just got me a 1k bulb, and kept the higher priced 1k ballast, but i guess honesty is best policy.

Wow, ok guys thanks. Of all the mixed answers people get on any forums, I think this is a pretty definitive answer. I will not be trying it. I'll buy a cfl or something for propagation, more expense in my seemingly never ending quest to build a growroom. Any tips on propagation lighting? Sorry if its a different thread, but I have your attention....

Peace out people and thanks, you may have just saved my life........

It'll run. For a very short time. The ion flow in the bulb is too high for it's rating and it will consume itself.

Either to black sides -> on/off cycling, or exploding.

I wouldn't do it.
