40' Shipping container Grow room Questions

This is going to be my first grow. The shipping container is completely insulated. I just don't know if I should use it as a sealed grow or vented grow??? Most people I see growing use the HPS lights and have to worry about heat but I'm going to be growing with 4 California light works 880 LED lights, I'm also going to be using an Under Current 16 XL13 hydroponic system. The system footprint is 3'8" wide and 22'5' long. I live in a desert climate where it gets cold at night even in the summer. I'm just wondering what sort of grow room I should create living in this environment sealed or vented? Any input would be great thank you. :)

if you go sealed you going to have to have ac and heat running on some type thermostat your also gonna need de humidifier/humidifier.when i was in Iraq living in a tent ,and finally getting a hooch the container is hot a hell during the day and humid and cold a shit at night.in your climate same problem for vented ,just go for the cheapest

I'm guessing come summer anything but sealed will be difficult to keep cool in a desert. Depending on outdoor temps you may consider switching your solution based on the season.

Not if the conex is buried underground temps are going to be more consistent especially if its well insulated

but as other have mentioned sealed usually means adding co2 and ac and possibly dehumidifiers

I would say depends on your situation and security but with good scrubbers and and some creativity you could conceal a "open" system

good luck

Sealed is a hell of a lot of work for a first timer imo. Air cooled lights with their own fans, flower at night. Make sure it really is insulated well. The best insulAtion is the spray on stuff.

Im sure that even in a sealed room you will have to cycle spent gases. Co2 isn't the only gas a plant needs, surely the oxygen would need replenished at some point? Maybe someone running a Sealy can chime in?

Thank you all for your input!!! It definitely helps. I more Question The Room size when finished will be 8x8x30. So i will need a 2400 cfm exhaust fan circulate all the air in the room every minute. So By moving that much air how do you keep the temp right when the lighting is all LED? Thanks in advance!!

i'm with cold smoke ,if you have the means go under ground run that exhaust out a disguised vent hood ,it should not be hard to control temps if you have some type of thermostat to control temps and fans.if you can dig to put it under ground design trenches that will also get rid of the smell .hell watch some of these dooms day prepers ,i'm sure you can get ideas from them

use air cooled hoods. have your exhaust side ducted out of the container and have the intake side of your hoods hooked to a carbon filter mounted towards the top of your container. cut a intake hole somewhere in the container (preferably low) and call it a day.

He's using LED- so wtf does he need sealed and vented hoods for?

The others are on point about being sure the container is well insulated. The suggestion of running the lights at night and off during daytime is on point.

To reduce heat gain in the daytime on the cheap, create a shade over the container- but keep an air gap between it and the metal so the heat doesn't simply soak through.

Go vented for starts, then upgrade as you gain experience and cash.

You've spent some serious coin on equipment. The only way to recoup your investment is to pay careful attention to environment, nutes and husbandry.

Best of luck, and take some pics- perhaps we will spot something you haven't considered.

My bad for missing the led quote. Set up Circulation fans to blow the heat from above the LEDs back down and around the space this will even out the temperature within the container. Just have thermostatically controlled fans and heaters and you'll be sweet.

Well I decided not to go with the 40 foot container. Im going to build a room at my house! :) I have a 10x20 ft space that will be fully insulated with R 21 on all sides. I'm new to growing so I'm not going to use it as a sealed room as of now. Here is a picture of the 2x6 wall that I'm framing in right now to make it fully enclosed. Its the breezeway between my garage and shop. I'm going to be running and undercurrent XL 16 with four California light work 880 LED lights to start. For my exhaust fan I have a 14 inch max's fan 1700 CFM. My question is I would like to use passive air for the intake and have the air sucked in from my garage I have a window in the far end of my garage that is about 1000 ft.² I was thinking that the air would come in and and warm up a little bit before it's pulled into the passive air vent into the room? I live in a colder climate so running these LEDs I don't think I want to be pulling in air directly from outside?
I would tell you to intake from inside your home, but at 1700 CFM you would exchange the entire air contents of a 3000 sqft home in about 15 minutes. You are going to need to find the sweet spot, too much venting will cost you huge if you have to heat/cool the excessive amount of air that you are moving, imagine having to heat new cold air every 15 minutes, the furnace would never turn off and imagine the gas bill. In winter you will save yourself a fortune if you both intake and exhaust indoors and add a dehumidifier.

I would setup your venting so you can switch from indoor->indoor to outdoor-> outdoor to indoor-> outdoor depending on the weather that time of year.
