I officially suck at germinating seeds in peat pellets and rapid rooterplugs! Since I finally settled on doing aero, I don't need the peat pellets disintegrating into the tubes and clogging things up. I think I keep getting too much water in the pellets. Anyway I took a seedling tray and filled it half full of hydroton (3X rinsed & soaked in 5.5 ph water), then I spread a bunchof seeds across the hydroton and using ph’d tap water with 1/8 strength gh bloom nutes (left-over’s ). Bam, I”ve never seen seeds sprouted so fast! Using a seedling heat mat @ 85°F covered with 2in dome. Corn & Okra were doing really well. That gave me two weeks to finish the aero unit. Using Ten 10’ 4”PVC tubes, w/3”netcups. I started building the stand and drilling out thetubes. Just an FYI for all the DIYers, it’s probably best not to attempt to usepower tools while under the effects of vicodin and muscle relaxers! I had aggravated my back several times just getting everything loaded and unloaded. Without thinking, I just popped the pills and kept on going.

Which would have been ok except I got a 3 ½ in hole saw and didn’t even realize it until it was too late. I am putting this here so perhaps no one else will make my stupid mistake. I know very well to double check everything before cutting or gluing etc. First time I ever had vicodin, so I wasn’t expecting that much of a hit.

I started this mess around mid-march. I finally got back on my feet enough to get it finished up. All I lack is attaching the pump and testing for leaks. I am betting there will be a few leaks. These storms the past few days have pretty much kept me from doing anything out doors but tomorrow I plan to have it finished up and tested.

As for scattering the seeds and covering them with more hydroton, I have to say it works great. Broccoli, which I had 0% success with last year, is booming this time around! I just haveto get he stuff into the hydro unit so it has room to grow! I did lose about 15seedlings overall, not too bad all things considered. I wasn’t able to get out and make sure they had water if they needed it for nearly a week. I think from now on if I continue to start seeds in this manner, I’ll use at least a 6’ deeptray, place the seeds into the net cups, and bury the cups in the hydroton. Those plants seemed to do the best, though they were not in cups. maybe hook up a flood & drain system so if I get laid up again the seeds/seedling will get enough water to survive. Learning as I go, lol

My “greenhouse” ended up being a carport purchased from Sam’s club! As the covering deteriorates, I will replace it with polycarbonate sheeting. I bought brass misters from outdoor misters. If they clog too much I’ll just drill out the sprayer tubes and run it as NFT. I don’t know if flood & drain wouldwork in this setup, I may find out, lol

Lowes has some green sprayers that work much better then the red ones from home depot for a low-pressure system, just in case anyone is interested; so anyway the holes on the tubes that were too large were patched. It looks likecrap but that is what I get for trying to keep going when I should have taken abreak until I found out how hard that crap was going to hit me. This is the 4thchange on pain meds. Shit keeps being pulled from the market…

So starting from 11/2 months behind, the plants may be a bit stunted but I think if it works at all it'll be fine!

I'll try and get some pics. I gotta tell ya the patched tubes look like crap, I'm so not happy with myself on that point but just gotta carry on and not do that again!!

Peace,

The Broccolli that I wasn't able to get to germinate last year worked great just scattering the seeds and covering them with hydroton

YOu can just see the edge of the Kessil H150 that I used instead of CFL's

Some Corn and Okra that need to be transplanted, they are a bit stunted. I have to start more anyway!

Hopefully today since we have sunshine I will be able to get the pump hooked up and check for leaks! With my luck it's either going to work like a champ or leak like a sieve!!

Peace!

The Kessil H150 is the only one I've used based upon a grow I saw here on riu, His grow was pretty damn good Grumpy old grower or something like that. I did a lot of research on the LED's and decided I was going to pass because the cost and lack of performance was to much to make it worth it. then I found Kessil. The just came out with the Spectral Halo wich is the equivelant of a 350w HID about $400
The H150 is donw to about $200 and some change now I got mine from hypnotic hydropoics a little over $240 delivered! The local grow shop wanted to charge list price plus shipping becasue they don't stock them. so I buy everything online now as long as I can get it delivered for what the local grow shop charges + gas cost as it is about 20min drive one way more with traffic. If I can get it cheaper online I go for it. It pays to shop around especially with the economy in the dump. people are dropping prices in some industries just to stay afloat.

The Kessil H150 Magenta will carry all the way through from seed/clone to harvest. if you google it you'll see several youtube videos using the magenta. The Halo just came out it's essentially a 350w equivialent. If you break it down using a 400w ballast with MH & HPS bulbs & Reflector you could spend $400.00 maybe a bit more depending on what you went for. The broccolli in the pics was late getting under light. the package said 10 to fifteen days to sprout. So i had them on the seedling heat mat with a towel over the dome. At 10 days I checked and they were already a good inch long and all laying over looking for light! I put the Kessil on them and in two days they went from pale to green. I also added some micro & bloom to fresh water & pured it into the tray I also sprayed them with a very weak micro/bloom mix as well. They are still under the Kessil even though they are in the greenhouse. I don't think they need it any longer really. I have to start more seeds now anyway, ha ha!

So Here I am a month 1/2 later I just got the aero unit together & tested for about 30 mins. A lot of the sprayers aren't working (pisses me off). I don't think my pump has enough psi or I didn't get the lines cleaned out well enough. I'm betting on #2. I get sidetracked easily, add, lol. The sprayers that were working were putting out a really fine mist like they are supposed to 5micron brass sprayers. If I have to I'll try the red home depot sprayers. it's a major step down but the green one at lowes I think are too large for the round tubes. If I had use the square tubes it wouldn't be problem. Live & learn, lol. I tried the DIY aero because I knew I wouldn't be happy with myself until I did.
I really prefer simple designs. NFT is probably what this will turn into as I'm not going to piddle around unclogging all those sprayers, that's if I can find a stiff enough piece of wire to use on the sprayer heads. The way I put it together I have to pull the sprayers to get the spraylines out. If I have to do that I may just leave them out and use those sprayers for a misting system to lower temps in the Greenhouse! water pressure from the spigot is enough to get the right psi for those sprayers. So it won't be a total waste of $150.00. I really wish I had a way to test all these ideas before buying a bunch of stuff, lol. It would be much more economical. On another note the Wifey wanted a misiting system by where we all congregate outside so I am pretty sure I have enough sprayers for the GH and where we all hang out at Outside.
Piece!!!
