1st Time DWC Grow - Amnesia Lemon, La Musa & Madness

My first attempt at a thread like this and a grow like this (or a grow at all). :-o

It's not entirely accurate to call it my first, as I grew some bag seed in a DWC set-up very similarly, but they were all males, so I figured to start all over with some Femmed seeds from 'tude.

Growing in a closet, with a 250w HPS (I know that MH would be ideal at this stage, but I have to go with what I've got) using an 18 Gallon Tote with 4 sites.

Using Technaflora Nutes. The strains I am growing are: Barney's Farm Amnesia Lemon, World of Seeds Madness and Delicious Seeds La Musa. Madness and La Musa were freebies. May as well make my rookie mistakes with some freebies.

The one issue I had with my bagseed grow, was keeping the temps down. I have been able to keep the temperature on this one between 76 - 79 degrees, a trend I hope continues for the next few months.

Started Seeds to Germ: May 21
Planted Germed Seed in Rockwool: May 23 (May 24 for Madness)
Placed in DWC Tote: May 25 (May 26 for Madness)

Here we are. Will continue to update and am open to any constructive criticism (or not so constructive criticism..I have pretty thick skin). I started with the light at about 3ft, but have lowered it to 2 Ft. Wanted to err on the side of caution with the HPS and seedlings combo.

Thanks Cannabuilding. The HPS light really affects the picture quality.....

Today is Day 5. I will post some progress pics around day 9-10. The Amnesia Lemon seems to be a fast starter. I sure hope I don't fuck this up. lol.

This will work fine for vegging them up, but i have experience growing more than one strain in a bucket. Might get a lucky roll and get 3 similar flowering strains, but different strains use different levels of nutes. Also if say one out of those three is an indica it will be dwarfed by its sativa sisters next to it. Whats the dimensions of the closet? If you got some similar room like VO i would recommend doing more than one bucket.

That is an excellent suggestion. I think I may have a tad more room than VO. I thought about the fact that the different strains sharing one reservoir could be problematic and pretty much decided after this one to switch to buckets. My thinking behind that switch was mostly practical maintenance (If you swapped out a Tote full of water, you know what I mean here), but I may just go ahead and switch before I flip the lights to 12/12. My space limitations are mostly due to using the 250w lights which gives max coverage of 3x3 as I understand it.

I use 2 150 w hps lights. If the plants are in a 4x4 pattern with a 3x3 light above it, just keep the plants moving, rotate them around and make sure they all get good exposure.

Updated for Day 7. I am going to add some CFLs I think to get some Blue Spectrum going. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Definitely going to move at least one of these plants, if not all 4 to buckets. La Musa is an auto and she will likely start flowering earlier than the other 3. Sucks that I will affect my yield on her when I have to flip to 12/12 for the others. Oh well, free and will be ready to blaze first if all goes well.

I agree with every word Bigz2277 has said , having multiple strains in the same growing medium is not a good idea, you will still get some bud from each plant, but you might run into problems at about day 30 into flowering, Some strains love to eat at 1.8ec at day 30 and others do not want to go about 1.2 ec at day 30, a much higher yeild and higher quality buid would be obtain from growing different strains in different containers. But one can grow the same strain in the same container as long as they are from the same mother or are about the same type of pheno type from the same strain wiht almost identical growth patterns.

Yea, the more I think about it, the more I think opting for the tote over the buckets was a bad idea, but one that can be easily fixed. Definitely going to move the La Musa and Madness to Buckets and will likely leave the two Amnesia Lemon girls in the tote. I appreciate the suggestion guys. I appreciate all the assistance I can get on this journey to bud independence. Also have plans to build a bubble cloner so I can take some clones from the 3 fems and speed up my 2nd grow

Haven't been able to get the CFLs yet, but that is coming. I need to pick up some aquashield to ensure my roots stay nice healthy. Will do that tomorrow along with posting some update pics...including of the root growth. I am pretty vaped and ready for Game of Thrones...

Found some energy after eating and decided to wait on Thrones, so:

I've been rotating freeze paks to keep the water temp down. They seem to help, but a I wrote above, definitely want to pick-up some aquashield.

i grow plants in one bucket. i use no ppm meter or ph meter. and i got hairs coming out everywhere. i had plants in all 3 slots of the lids of both buckets but from them all i have 2 females. the 2 females left i topped and they are doing great!

Roots came out fairly quickly. Usually takes me about a week to see them. They'll grow for about a week and then the plant will start taking off.

Yea, it was about a week. I actually had the water level up a little higher during (The bottom of my netpots were touching the top of the water) that initial week, just to ensure they were getting Water + Bubbles. I also started on Nutes as soon as I dropped them into the Tote (about 50%) with some Root 66 which I think helped encourage root development. My bagseed grow did not go this fast at all.

Picked up some Aquashield today. I noticed some brown in my roots yesterday, but it could have just been staining from the nutrients or sediment from those damn Hydroton pellets which seem to be dusty no matter how thoroughly you think you have rinsed them. I've also discovered that my camera takes some pretty good pictures in the dark if on the right setting, so I have some better pictures to post, as I snapped some as soon as I went into the 6 part of my 18/6 cycle.

After getting frustrated with the whole pictures from Mars thing, I decided to try out taking some pictures as soon as I hit my dark cycle. I think these came out much better:

I think moving forward I am going to snap all of my pictures during at the beginning of the dark cycle.

Took some pics last night and posted them in my journal but not here.

Day 13 (Day 12 for Madness, she is a day behind the rest). I am getting ready to drop Madness and La Musa into 3.5 Gallon buckets tonight and will snap those pics tomorrow.

Side Note: I just vaped some Lemon Haze and I am out of my mind right now and listening to a lil Frankie Beverly (but gonna flip to some hip-hop soon). I am definitely a Vaporizer convert...after 20 years of smokin' Backwoods. Have not bought a pack of those in like 3 weeks.

The seedlings are coming along great man, we can definately see the love, remember its always better to under fert than over fert :) and to slowly increase the feeding.

I alternate between vaporizing and smoking, i find out vaporizing gets me way to wacked out of my head (strain depended) when smoking the same strain. Vaporizing does allow you to get much higher with the same amount of bud compared to smoking it.

Keep the happiness growing, Peace to all.

Thanks Cannabuilding. I do spend a lot of my time with my girls, but mostly because I don't have timers and such going on. I have been primarily following the feeding chart that came with my Nutes, but based on seeing some burning on the tips of leaves and such, have dialed them back a bit. The one piece of equipment that I do not have, but ought to invest in is a PPM/EC meter (whatever the tool is actually called). I have been relying on my largely untrained eye and what "feels" right and so far I think I am doing okay. My roots are really starting to take-off.

Here are some updated pics as of Day 17 from seed (last night). I have moved Madness and La Musa to their own 3.5 Gal Buckets. Can I just reiterate that not doing buckets initially was a really bad idea. OMG....so much easier to maintain a bucket and give the individual plants the necessary adjustments to Nutes, PH etc.:

I always perfer vaping.. for taste aroma and less smell.. takes a bit for it to set it but then it hits hard. I will never get rid of nice joint or bong, but vape is first choice.

I am definitely a vape convert. The taste and effect cannot be topped not to mention the reduced impact on the lungs. My wife pretty much asked me to convert as my primary method solely for the health reasons and I cannot for the life of figure out why I resisted the idea.

I will still smoke the occasional blunt for that nice body stone, but the Vape high is so heady yet I feel motivated to do productive things.
