Just getting some JillyBean seeds and I want this grow to use super soil. I just want to know if anyone knows of a smaller batch of the super soil would be? I will be using Fox Farms Ocean Forest as a base soil, or try to look at my local nursery for a good soil. All I am growing is 4 plants in 3 gallon containers, so 1 large bag of FF OF is enough to fill them.
I also noticed that their is no perlite used in it. Should there be or no? I really like the idea of just adding water, but I have read on sub's other forum that you have to give a tea once in the middle of flowering and a microblast, and maybe some molasses for sweetiner. What should the tea consist of and the microblast? Thanks everyone, I'll hopefully post a journal of this grow. |

Supersoil is ricky, might be contaminated( soil gnats, etc). get the perlite, you wnt it trust me. no ferts till about three weeks or so. if you like the water only idea, go organic. an teas are varied, eveyone has sa method and mix, I do not use teas, so, can not help you there.

I would mix ocean forest with a bag of lightwarrior or a cubic foot of peat. I am using ocean forest and organicare aeration mix. I am having great results. I use a lot of extra perlite.
Do not feed a tea in veg. Lol, I tried this and some odd things started to happen. No burn, just a little too much action. If properly cooked the mix should be very bioactive and a healthy soil food web and the plants should ne able to do the rest. I am not in flower yet but with one so I am not sure yet. The one in flower is a week in and looking good. It is a sativa so I will have to do something most likely. Maybe a topdress but be eary that guano is strong. For a tea that will pick up the soil is the growth has lost vigor try this. RO water. 1 tbsp molasses a gallon 2-3 cups compost a gallon 2 cups worm castings a gallon Bubble this with airhoses and as much air as you can. For a five gallon bucket I use three aquarium air pumps at least. With enough air 12-24 hours in you should see mass bubble action. I would add a few cups of this to the water you give each plant. This will overload the soil with bacteria if you are not lucky! At least I think that for me just water is all that I will be needing. These teas and things are not so needed when you have a good batch of soil cooked. Sub, uses only water, and the science backs this up. I can see vigor slowing in flower so maybe a light guano topdress.

Thanks teatree. So mix a big bag of OF with a smaller bag of LW? I will also add a lot of perlite as well. How long should I let this cook for before I use it? I've read anywhere from a month! Will 2-3 weeks be good enough? Here is a list of the things that I've found at my local garden centers with prices:
Worm castings $5 - 4.5lb (bag) Bone meal $8 - 4.5lb High P Jamacian Bat Guano $8 - 2.2lb Blood meal (or as Epsoma calls it Dried Blood. How morbid haha) $12 - 3.5lb Epson Salt $6 5lb I can't find the Rock Phosphate, azomite, or powdered humic acid at my garden center. I have liquid humic acid, could I just give that to the plant with waterings and not put the powdered in the soil? Also, the dolomite lime that I currently have is grandular. Is this okay, or should I crush it with a rolling pin? And lastly, the Epson Salt that they have says "Derived from Magnesium Sulfate". Is this what I want? What kind of percentages would you mix these for that smaller batch? I could probably do the calculations myself, but if anyone has already done it. On a side note, tea tree, I noticed you used the words "soil food web". haha, I'm looking at my copy of Teeming with Microbes on my bookshelf as I type. Great read, made me really look at soil completely differently when I first read it. It defintally made me "understand" organics better. |

lol, is that the same one in my bathroom? by jeff lownfels, the soil food web. Or do you have the ingraham. Yeah, the soil food web made me, with this organic section, into a real gardener. In hydro, a only followed a form and did not have a clue as to what npk was for, except that one day I would. lol.
Wait until you do a super soil grow. It is going to blow your mind with how these plants should be raised. Forget the once a week chem/hydro sounding feed in that inert media bull and get into the regular soil amending like it was meant to according to the brain. They can literally eat all the time in this soil. For real, man, growth in this amended soil is triple. Totally healthy. Dont even stress it. I did and no worries. In fact I have a rule not to even think of teas now. I would go easy on the dolomite if you have ocean forest and lightwarrior. They already have it, so I did not use it. In fact in one grow when I did I noticed that the ph was iverly high even for bacteria dominance. IDK. . . I would not even worry about the humic extras and the other crap. I used blood, STEAMED bone meal, Kelp meal, and greensand. Also I used azomite and perlite. Azomite I got on eBay. Steamed bone leal is needed as it breaks down way faster. Peace of mind variety is best as fox farms puts all kind of extra crap in. Good for mineral on its own, that is the reason I use greensand. It breaks down real slow but it has loads of micronutrients in it. Mj needs them so I use it. For extra P and K I am simply using a little bulb food at a half cup a cubic foot. This will give my girls some extra and I hope not to much of anything. In the mix I have now I used guano, indo, anything for the P. Sub uses no P at all so maybe one needs not worry. But, every bloom booster uses K so why not try. The plants will choose. Also I am not using the epsom salts. I have heard it makes for a harsh smoke. Also the bone meal has everything needed and so does the other things in quantity. Dolomite has it all in fact. This grow I am using peat as my medium, so I added epsoma garden lime and I pray not to much. MJ is an annual, so she will call to those bacteria. Also, let it cook for at least 2 weeks but the longer the better. To help it cook, mix ro water, liquid karma, and molasses. Keep it moist, not drenched. Should be fine. To be honest, for my one gallon veggers in soil that I amended at ahlf str I did not cook at all! It works still. No complaints.

Very nice. Yeah, I think I'm going to have too make up my own version of a "super soil". It won't last for the entire grow, but thats okay if it only lasts a month. I can feed the plants teas after that time. Heres what I have lined up so far:
FF OF FF LW Jamacian High P Guano Super Bat Tea Dolomite Lime (should I use grandular or powdered?) Greensand Bone Meal Worm Castings Bio Tone Starter Plus Have you ever heard of Bio Tone Starter Plus? It is an epsoma brand and has a shit load of microbeasties in it. Its only $8 for a 5 lb bag. Hows that mix sound to you in 3 gal bags. I know it can't be used for the entire flower cycle, but like I said, a month is okay. It'll give it a great jump start. |

I dont know though. It's only going to be in 3 gal bags. I don't have $$ or room right now for anything bigger (I can only grow 4 female plants at a time). We'll see though. Probably gonna mix it up in a couple weeks. Planting some JillyBean, Heri OG Kush, Trainwreck, & Cheese into peat cups. Then transplanting them into 1 gal containers with just FF OF & LW. Then when I am ready to flower I will wait to see sex. When sex is identified I will transplant again into 3 gal bags with my own super soil. Gonna be popping those beans in about 2 1/2 weeks.
On another note, how long does it take for an order from Breedbay to the US? I live in New England, if that helps times wise. Just wanna make sure I get our JillyBean in time! |

When you transplant into your super soil, use FFOF and LW mix in the areas that touch the root ball and only use your super soil to fill up the lower portion of the bags so the roots can grow into it and acclimate to the hot soil. |

Also, think I could replace the bone meal with high N bat guano instead? Would this be fine for ph reasons? Last edited by necrobot; 07-14-2009 at 07:04 PM.. |
