hm, you made me think that as concsious beings we are forced, in the form of perception, into a natural paradigm or 'belief'. Perception is innately rife with delusion as per its nature... i really would hate to live in a world that I alone shaped, that reminds me of Coraline (trippy ass movie, see it just for the graphics)

and our minds will never shape the external world directly as we cannot grasp the multitude of things happening around us at all times. the subatomic and astronomic forces at work surrounding us are far outside anything our pitiful brains could percieve. (just like our eyes can't pick up on infrared or radio waves, only the very scarce visible spectrums of light.)

@DJBoxhouse: I feel like I have a good grasp of what you're saying, however I disagree about purpose and especially that of our human species. Our sun will eventually burn up and die or explode. Life on Earth will not be possible. IF humans are still around by then (highly unlikely)we will need to find another habitable planet on a distant solar system. This same reasoning can be applied to any threat of humanity (war, giant asteroids, a second ice age, disease, etc.) Therefore, we do have a singular human purpose (whether or not it is recognizable), which is to find a place hospitable when it is time to leave Earth. In fact, this view lines up with the progress we have made as far as rockets, computers, food science, etc. It would appear we are heading in the right direction and there may be snags along the way. Hopefully, we have many thousands of years to achieve this purpose.

Also, as Ray Bradbury explains in The Martian Chronicles, "Life was its own purpose."

Our purpose; Survival? Or is that our inherent ability to do so through instinct. As a species of course, no importance or anything in particular. Surely I wouldn't want anything casting a light of importance on us over anything else.

To Woodstock: The apparent randomness in the lives of nihilists is merely but an illusion too! It all has direction, it is merely circumstance driven. The only difference I've truly found is that those who do not understand purpose tend to follow the same road. It's like going through the darkness with somewhere to go in mind, You don't want to trip so you watch right in front of your feet, for fear of tripping or falling over, you don't like taking chances, and the guy in front of you seems like he knows what hes doing. Ergo you follow the leader. Those who understand? the only difference is they're given a flashlight for they're journey, and in that tend to go wherever direction they desire as they point this flashlight in any direction desired. Because they can see, with the guidance and understanding of 'purpose' they realize they're on an endless field of possibilities.

When survival is communicable and conscious does it reach beyond instinct alone? Importance is subjective anyway. I'm just happy I've got O2 to breathe and no dinosaurs to run from. Everything else is gravy.
