Hey just a newb so have a newb type question. I was given some seeds and not sure of the strain

Some of the seeds are pure white while the others are dark brown, so I'm trying to germinate one of each as I only have enough room for one plant in my closet. If both germinate then I'll give one to my mate to grow.

you might want to make sure that the white ones are not premature seeds. I usually do a squeeze check on them to test. I prefer to use the hard dark veiny ones myself. Take each seed place it between your thumb and pointer finger & squeeze a little (not massively) & if it pops then it is no good. If it doesnt pop then germinate it. Good luck to you.

Hey catgirl, grow twice as many plants as you want to harvest, since half will be males. You dont want to grow one plant and have to kill it when you find out she's a he.

I talked to my friend who gave me the seeds and they might be Silver Pearl - I'll just grow them and see what comes up, but I remember reading that males come from higher temperatures and longer light cycles or something, anyone have any experience of this? anyways I better go and study sexing plants...

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:
* a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
* a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
* a higher humidity will give more females.
* a lower temperature will give more females.
* more blue light will give more females.
* Fewer hours of light will give more females.
It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions.

Ok it's been awhile since posting here but unfortunately the seeds didn't surface after planting. So I guess I might have been doing something wrong, but I did have better luck with the one other seed out of the 7 I started with that actually germinated and is now throwing out leaves, so to the grow journal...

You may want to start your seeds in something else. I recommend the Rapid Rooters. There is a pic of them that I posted with seedlings. Tray of 50 is about $15.00, comes with a lid for propagation. I have used a few at a time and left the rest covered for later use. Many of us use rockwool cubes also with good results. May want to give one of them a try. VV
