With that thread about "biggest disappointment"/"most overrated", I thought I'd reverse this and go for some good karma.

Which inexpensive and/or "no-name" strains have you tried that turned out to be much better than you expected?

Nirvana's Chrystal and Bubblelicious, papaya impressed me too, Sensi's Hindu Kush and Shiva Shanti II, HGF Cheese and Afghani. Also, gage green has made a "Bastard Series" been eyeballing that colombian gold, 12 seeds for 44 dollars, and 5 seeds of colombian black at the same price @ Seaofseeds.

All my ghs seeds turned out pretty damn good but these were the popular ones super lemon haze, white widow. I also grew some beans from dankhouse which were very cheap for the genetics whitefire x fire og and fire og f2s and tht shit was very good.

i had these amazing seeds from this guy who had been breeding for 15 years. dude really knew his shit. he spent hours upon hours to select many stud males. he never breeds them to clone only females, that would be too easy. shit is so amazing i'm going to tell you about the other stuff i've been impressed with.

thc bomb is fucking incredible! berry bomb as well. cheap, potent, frosty as hell, smells great, taste great, great yield and easy as pie to grow.

yea, Have you had bad results with this strain? i grew all of sensi's shiva strains(shiva are some of my fav old school indica's) Shiva skunk was a bit too stretchy for my tastes, long flower like 65-70 days. i tried the shiva shanti 1 and it had herm issues, stinky ass plants they were for sure. the Shiva shanti 2 didn't give me the same issues as Shiva Shanti 1. 1 pack of each. haven't grown Sensi seeds gear in almost a year now but i wouldn't mind growing Shiva Shanti II again, its pretty old school though not really killer potency but i liked the high.

I like Dinafem Sour Diesel - never had a failure in two grows with DSD seeds

The following Nirvana strains failed DISASTEROUSLY (refused to flower altho other strains in same grow flowered nicely): Nirvana AK48, Nirvana Super Skunk, Nirvana Northern Lights

Nirvana Bubbleicious turned out very well. Also, Nirvana Kaya Gold really surprised me when it just kept budding and budding.

Also, (as much as I dislike the terrible customer service from Nirvana), I had a huge success with ten fem Shortrider seeds.

To directly answer your question: Nirvana Short Rider (2011 vintage) turned out to be VERY STONEY FROSTY buds grown in coir soil with chem fert under 600w hps. NOTE: Nirvana's customer service is TERRIBLE, but the Short Rider seeds are good and cheap - so just make sure that you use a credit card (in case you need to reverse the charges) AND order 2-3 months before you absolutely must start the grow

So far, every strain mentioned is pretty well-known for being dank, except maybe the Shiva Shanti or Pot of Gold. I mean come on, let's stick to what the OP requested. Sannies and Mr. Nice strains shouldn't even be mentioned.

Thank you.

Mr. Nice is one of the best known seedbanks, and his strains aren't particularly inexpensive (though he typically does give you 15 per pack). I'm not saying they're not worth the money, but pretty clearly, this is a case of getting what you pay for.

Sannie seeds are more along the lines of what I was asking about here. $30 will buy you some pretty awesome strains from his shop, as good as stuff 2-3x the cost elsewhere.

Again, the question is about INEXPENSIVE strains that turned out to be UNEXPECTEDLY good.

Maybe I should rephrase the question: What great strains can be had for $40 or less? What little-publicized strains from smaller/lesser known breeders are actually great, yet inexpensive?

im really liking this thread, its great for people who dont have much money, but still want to grow good genetics..there are still a lot of breeders out there that are in it more for the love of the plant than the love of money.

DNA Genetics Rocklock. I think more people are trying it now though and starting to catch on...It's my fave fave favorite strain!

Here are some pics, this plant grew from a fem seed I made myself using a couple of Rocklock clones.
