A simple Google search will tell you that the consensus is that it doesn't and I personally have never witnessed it when growing in hydro

Wouldn't worry about a few leaves at the bottom of that bush. I myself would have stripped most of those branches off the bottom third by that stage due to lack of light penetration that low down.
