I think heat has a bit to do with it as well... I'm using CFL's, in summer when the temp was 28/29c my plants would have struggled alone for a week, but now I'm in winter the temp is 21c and they'll go a week without water no worries.

How can you grow a mother from seed? To find out if it's a girl surly you have to put it into flower, by them the damage is done. Do you sex clones from the mothers to identify sex? My Mothers have always been clones. They seem okay.
