Easy way to figure out veg time...take the total height the plant can actually get in your setup...let's say you have 3 feet for the plant to grow in without getting too close to lights and stuff. For indic a heavy strains divide this number by 2 (1.5 feet) and sativa heavy strains divide by 3...

No, nothing really hurts the rock wool. I've never really grown like you are right now, I usually just use a cube, and surround it with hydroton to improve the draining capabilities of the rock wool.
