does the plant have to be in DIRECT sunlight? what if there are lots of tree cover and bushes, will the plant get enough light?

So I germinated and succesfully sprouted 3 little plants outdoors (in cups) around 5 days ago. I got a 18" 15w flourescent bulb and brought them indoors today, I have the bulb around 3-4" away from the plants... I fjust found this forum today after setting it up and I'm pretty sure thats nowhere...
