Can you take some pictures of the lights/bulbs so this can be cleared up. If you have a mercury vapor light, they are useless, they produce less light, the incorrect light spectrum and are expensive to run compared to hps for growing. thanks

As far as a shopping list...you need to figure out if you want to do soil, soilless, hydro, etc You could easily build a nice 8 bucket dwc system in that area and like i said above, rotate out a plant every week. what kind of budget are you working with?

are you limited to 4x4 only? I'd build a shelf about 2-3ft from the bottom, put clones in the bottom under a few CFL lights and then grow them until they are too big for the space and then transfer into the top area under like a 600w hps. You could rotate out like 1 plant every week.

aquarium rocks should be okay for a growing medium in a dwc/aero setup replacing expanded clay right? I don't really see a reason why they wouldn't... unless the plant roots don't like blue rocks?

Check out the growfaq, you can probably spend a few days reading there, it will give you a good base of knowledge for growing. But as soon as the plants germinate, plant them into the soil. Probably another good idea to go with soil for the first grow, as that it is more forgiving than hydro...

With that amount of room, you might wanna check out the SoG method of growing. You could use your 400w for the mothers, and the 1000w for the first 2 tables (rotating the light every 12 hrs) You could pickup another 1kw hps and have a damn nice setup. :)
