Default Illegalizing Cigarettes
I know that a lot of stoners smoke cigs, and I enjoy a drag now and then too.
But I can't help but feel that a movement to illegalize cigarettes on the grounds that,
  • They kill thousands every year
  • 60% of all nic addicts started before they were 18. (A danger to children and the inability of the law/market to stop children from getting them.)
  • Addictive
  • Corporate dishonesty and the immoral additives that surround their entire manufacture
would help people see the completely arbitrary mindset that allows cigarettes to be legal, when marijuana is not. Even if it doesn't go through, it would make people pay attention to this horrible mass-produced poison that the government allows to exist on the market. And maybe consider the folks whom are fighting to have a medicine put into our market.

I'd like to stress that, in my mind, cigarettes, as a product, would no longer be able to be legally sold and mass produced. However, if someone were to grow tobacco and go through the steps to create home-rolled cigs, that would be fine.
Also, the people whom are at the head of these cigarette companies would be held responsible for the deaths their products were found to be the primary cause of death. They knew exactly what they were selling, and what it did to people. Seems to me that anyone else would have been charged with multiple counts of manslaughter. They arrest doctors who do assisted suicides right?

What's your opinion?

Yeah, I was fine with cigarettes till I watched some really eye-opening videos on youtube. I still smoke after I exercise, but I feel bad about it. Cig's are pretty cheap over in Florida though.

Let's not forget trans fats folks! We need government telling us what we can a cannot do! Let's just let the government make it illegal and everything will be fine. Then! Let's let the government give us "free" healthcare and if they find anyone partaking of any "illegal" substances, they can cut them off and fine them!

I don't like the idea of Big Government telling us what to do either.

For me it really about stopping mass-production, and punishing the people in charge of the corporations. The men who withheld information from the public about how cigarettes cause cancer were never really given what they deserved, (prison time). Only made to give fractions of the money they make selling death, for education on the subject.

And again, all those whom wish to continue smoking are free to cultivate the plant for themselves. Now wouldn't it be nice if the same were applied to pot?

And when a cell phone user driving a car runs a red light and kills a child in a car, who's at fault? The cell phone user or the corporation who manufactured the cell phone? Unfortunately, it's not that simple.

I have to agree with Dave on this one. It doesn't matter who manufactures them. ANY SUBSTANCE YOU PUT INTO YOUR BODY IS YOUR CHOICE. Granted, big tobacco lied about a lot of it...but a lot of other companies have lied or exaggerated about the benefits of their products to get folks to buy. While these companies often make things look rosy, there are plenty of doctors, healthcare professionals, etc, who tell you differently. You just have to try to make as informed a choice as possible. That being said, I do think big tobacco should be held responsible for deliberately lying about the harmful effects of smoking since the 60's.

I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out ciggies are bad for you, even before the studies were out all the smokers coughing and wheezing were not doing it for fun.Really now do you think a 2 pack a day smoker in the 50's got out of bed coughed up a lung and seriously wondered WTF was giving him a little tickle in his throat?Come on now lol! That is like an alcoholic wondering why he is a bit yellow,or a mcdonalds junkie wondering why he is fat.

I believe in consumer responsibility as much as the next person, and again I don't like Big Government either. But I really believe that the common civilian doesn't have the tools necessary to fight against the subtle (and not so subtle) evils of cigarette companies.

I think that, even if the face of consumer responsibility (considering that the majority of regular smokers started before they were old enough to be legally allowed to do so) that cigarette companies (but mostly the people who lead them) should be held responsible. Like I said, they do arrest doctors found to help in assisted suicide. So murder is murder, in the eyes of the government, (I personally have no problem with assisted suicide, but that's another thread.) why should cigarettes be any different?

Back in the 50's, people still believed, mostly because cigarette companies were putting out advertisements depicting doctors saying that this brand was good for digestion, or this one was less 'irritating', that cigarettes, for the most part, were good for you.
When doctors began to speak out about how bad they were for people, cigarette companies were quick to add 'filters' that actually filter nothing. After finding that people felt toxins were screened when the butt changes colors, they chose materials that would do that from the heat of the smoke being inhaled through.

See what I mean? These low-down tactics aren't something that I think the common people can fight against. Especially considering the millions they make every year, the legal teams they have.
