It's a sad commentary. The problems are far more complicated than just that though. We have to address the reasons there are so many criminals. Is it the laws that make people criminals or is it the lack of education and opportunities? I'd say in the case of drug laws, it is the laws, but without education and opportunity, those same people need to steal to afford the drugs that are priced so high because of their legal status, It's a catch 22. I don't see any easy cure. Any cure would be at least 2 generations away, and no-one is even talking about a cure. It's easier to just build more prisons, In fact it is fast becoming the industry of choice for venture capitalists.

Here in CA there is now a statewide hiring freeze for all departments with the exception of the Dept. of Corrections.

The largest lobbying group to oppose the passage of Prop. 215 (Medical marijuana) was the California Correctional Officer's Union.

Like I said in another post ... the Drug War is a welfare program for government employees ... especially those who work in the criminal justice departments.

I agree. the problem is this: divided we fall, united we stand. We, the American people, are so divided that we'll never accomplish anything positive. The consensus on drug policy is so divided that here in Nv, the vote on legalizing MJ was 49% for-51% against, that's about as divided as you can get. BTW VI, just because one part of the government is fucked doesn't mean the whole government is fucked, although sometimes I wonder.

I've given a lot of thought to this issue. The only thing I can come up with that the federal government is better at, or more efficient at, than the private sector is waging war and killing people. What say you Med?
