I'm currently doing a research paper on Kirov's murder, debating whether it was necessary for Stalin and also very convenient. But through my extensive amount of reading and researching on various websites I've discovered Stalin's huge admiration for Hitler and the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. Stalin truly believed that Hitler was a genius and a very admirable man. I believe that Stalin learned from Hitlers ways and it lead into the Purges. Stalin needed a way to get rid of any threats, those that would prevent him from obtaining and then keeping ultimate control over Russia. He may or may not have chosen to use the Purges as the way to deal with this issue if it had not been for Hitler. He did alter a few of Hitler's methods in the way that he used show trials to demonstrate that his victims were guilty and simultaneously he created a great terror over Russia which gave him even more control. Hitler just killed the mother fuckers.

Stalin was a violent man but would he have gone this far if Hitler didn't cause the Holocaust?

He might have gotten a little bit from adolf, but what stalin did has been done for thousands of years by the mulititude of absolute rulers from the pharohs, through greece, and rome, the ancient chinese dynasties, some a little less vicious then the others, but all have in common the desire of the rulers to purge the societies of any threat, or rivalry, and in some cases like joe stalin went to the extreme in the amount crimes committed to keep grasp of the total control and fear over the society.
