As a member in the construction trade (carpentry) it is a known fact that majority of union guys are lazy, cut cormers and do inferior workmanship not to mention the over inflated costs to compensate for the unin imposed fees.I did unin before but to be honest its a scam of poor workers and mob like enforcements. You can find your own work or get fined 5grand if caught.You dont use the crew they assign to a job they boycott and fine you.Hell they charge you 5 grand to go to get certifed on how to use tsandard scaffling which is only poles inserted ina larger pole..Once I got away from unions the money and quality and speed of work was greatly better. We do hire some union guys on the side who are friends or known to do good work but get disallusioned with how the union rapes them.Differnt industry unions might be different but in the trades the unio is a beast of mob proportions who hurts its members much more then helps.Take a look right now that all the union guys dont have union approved jobs they are all posting locally for jobs trying to survive as the union tells them they cant work as the jobs arent union jobs.If the guy falsafied a report or inspection yeah he should loose his job and go to jail just lazy and dolaar pinching like most union guys.Do as little for as much money as you can

1/2 of the unions are mob controlled and the other 1/2 cat even read a tape measure nor cut a rafter tail straight .They fly through the job . work 1/2 days , Do shoddy work want a full days pay and then they want kickbacks .. |

% I'm really sick of this lazy union bullshit. I worked union for 20+ years and saw very few lasy assholes. The lazy ones were the first ones to go in layoffs and the last to get hired. A contractor had to hire one for one day then he could fire him and blacklist him, IE not hire him back. They are eventually weeded out. I personally hired hundreds of union employees and got maybe a dozen lazy bastards. They were let go the same day, and if they showed up on my site again, I sent them packing with a call to the union Rep. The reps would sometimes try and pressure me to use them as no-one wanted them, but I always refused. I always got the phone # of good employees and would give them a call to tell them to ask for my job at the hall as I'd need them for a while. I may agree that some union employees are lazy, but not the majority. the people that say this are union busters and sleazy employers. The thing that pissed my boss off the most was having to put money into a guys benefit package that the guy would never recieve, just like me, 8-1/2 years a union carpenter and I get squat from the union. The unions today are mob run scandals, but the idea of the workers having a voice in their employment is a good one.

I have a 3 month term position in a good union job right now and must say I see a large number of very lazy shoddy ppl. But it is good on the other hand if i see something unjust or unsafe I file a report and the weight gets put on my senior, and I can refuse any unsafe work.

First off for "serious projects" union contractors are chosen ahead of their non union counterparts at allmost a 3 to 1 ratio for several reasons, with the first reason being the skill level of the tradesman,when i say "serious" im not talking about a 7-11 or a Walmart job,im talking about billion dollar jobs such as Casinos,Hospitals & such. The second reason is the higher productivity level per man,union contractors bid against non union contractors every day,they pay their men twice the hourly wage plus full benifits of their non union competition,union contractors are able to pay higher wages even when their non union counterparts are paying 40 % to 50% less because of the higher level of production per man with the union contractors. The reason union contractors are able to have such higher production numbers goes hand in hand with skill level & updated training,in order to stay competitave against their non union competition who pay drastically less union contractors need an edge,this edge is skill level & constatntly updated training methods. FYI union construction workers are light years ahead of their non union counterparts in terms of training & skill level,the top skill level in union work is the Journeyman classification,in order to receive this classification a guy has to be smart to start with,then if he is accepted into the apprentiship program he has to go to apprentiship school for 3 years,thats right 3 years of intense training,the men are not paid to go to school either,they do this at their own expense & on their own time,at night after working hours wit no promise of a gaurenteed graduation. After the apprentice passes all 3 years of his apprentiship he will become a new Journeyman but all is not over yet,his company will now put him under a microscope,examining every detail of his daily work,they will soon be giving this new journeyman a 50% raise in hourly rate & if he is not qualified the contractor will block his acceptance as a journeyman & dispute his qualifications,this does happen all the time,last year i blocked 3 apprentices from obtaining their Journeyman cards. If the apprentice is qualified to become a Journeyman he will then start saftey training & Advanced CPR & rescue training,if these two classes are passed then & only then will he receive a Journeymans card,he will also need to take classes every so often to keep his skill level updated with new construction methods. Non union training is nothing in comparison. Its a dog eat dog business with construction,being union has nothing to do with getting work,its results that matter & above all else its who comes in with the lowest bid to do the job,building owners & investors could not give 2 shits less weather a company is a union contractor or not,all they care about is the bottom line numbers on the estimate sheets,the guy with the lowest numbers will get the work,union or not. This type of heavy compitetion between union & non union contractors would not exist if the union contractors employed lazy ignorant men,infact the only reasons that construction unions still exist is because of their advanced training of the work force,higher quality levels & better production. |
