when my uncle came back from Nam he set up housekeeping in an old ww2 era meat freezer he bought for a couple grand. it was on an old military staging post out in the swamps near napa and he basically set it up as a house, a bunker and a place to grow weed.
mind you this was not a refrigerator box, this was a refrigerated warehouse, like 200 feet on a side with 30 foot ceilings all sheathed in insulation, aluminium and steel. he even kept the cooling system operational (just in case) it was essentially a goddamned huge man cave full of guns, nunchucks, ninja stars, fireworks, weed and booze.
he also kept a regular job, but he lived in a fucking meat locker full of dope, guns and end of the world survival equipment. damn i miss that crazy bastard
(rural folks got more sense than forcing folks to join a system if they dont want to). those who were far enough out that the cost of mandating their connection was prohibitive were "allowed" (the city manager got a ration of shit for that statement, i tell you what!) to maintain their own shit as long as they didnt fuck up their neighbor's yards. as the area becomes more urban the smalllholders and ranchers will most likely sell off bits and pieces for development, and all new development is required to be connected to sanitation water and power systems at the developer's expense.
