you cant cut corners on aircraft or subs. thats just the way it is. most of the stuff thats "thrown in the garbage" (more likely sent back to the contractor or recycled by another sub-contractor) is rejected parts and obsolete equipment. theres not a big surplus market for bulkhead hatches that are slightly out of square or faulty pressure valves that cost half a million bucks. my grandpappy used to work on a sub construction base in ww2, and they really did throw a lot of shit into the scrap heap (this was before recycling) and most of it got melted down for scrap for the war effort even then. nobody throws away steel brass copper aluminium or really any metal object in the defense industry.

we don't get any of our metals back from the base. their considered junk even though they're not. the metals are still good. they could send them back to us, have us burn the rubber out, re-sandblast and bam brand new part. i see what your saying though....... they don't literally "go in the trash"

CIWS weapons platforms have hundreds of circuit boards on them. These guns need to be up at all times. The CIWS can detect faults in a board. We buy these boards for 5-20k a piece
If a resistor goes out we send them back to the contractor who gives us a 2k credit

Do the math
The resistors are mil-spec
meaning instead of .25 cents they cost the contractor a buck fifty

They install the resistor and sell us the board back for 5-20k

Nuclear winter has never been established to be anything other than alarmist tripe imo. When both sides were actively testing multimegaton bombs in atmosphere, the weather consequences were nil. The direst prediction i have heard would have a bilateral nuclear war generate 150 Tg (150 million tons) of total smoke, the majority of which would not make it into the stratosphere.

Mount Pinatubo generated 28 Mt of sulfuric aerosol in the stratosphere, and global temp reduction was measured/estimated at 0.2 to 0.7 degrees Celsius. And sulfate aerosol is a better IR shield than smoke. A maximal nuclear war can match but not exceed that effect in my considered opinion.

Ordinarily I tend to agree with you, but in this instance I will ask you to please ask yourself what's real. I don't give nuclear winter scenarois much credence with today's arsenals reduced in bomb numbers and sharply reduced in aggregate yield.

born in 89, i believe that was a little before my time. lol (i just did a little research) I'm more of a kaman aerospace kid. grew up with that mill right in my home town. lol helicopters everywhere
