Default What good has the U.S. done in the last 10 years?
Ok folks I need some help here. I am smoking a bit here - catching up on the political posts and it hit me 'God, what was the last positive change or event the US was involued in implimenting?' I can't think of anything - is it because I'm stoned? God I hope so.

I'm thinking more global change that is positive. Please don't try to tell me the war on terriorism is positive - I don't have the energy today to debate that.

Al Gore's 'Inconvient Truth' might count towards something. Whatever your views of him you got to admit global warming really got media coverage in America after his movie. And since we are one of the biggest contributors - educating us helps the whole world. Although he's a private person. But shit that says it right there, he got more done with one private movie than his whole political career.

So what have we done to help the world lately? Inform me if I'm not seeing something please. But also if none of us can think of anything, then all of us really need to rethink who we are as an American.

I'm sure there are some humanitarian efforts waged or being waged like the AIDS work in Afrika and many other charitable works, But the USA as a country, I don't see much positive going on. I do see much negative energy being foisted about by the US. And without a major change in this countries politics (Ron Paul, Kucinich or Gravel), I doubt anything positive will happen.

We have a 28 billion dollar trade deficit. Looks to me like we are giving people jobs. I guess thats one way of looking at it. I understand that everyone looks to the US for support. Bearing that in mind, I don't see too many other countries going out of their way to help much of anything except themselves.

But what quality of jobs are we producing? The average american in 2007 can't compete with the standard of living of the average family in the '50s. And that is with 2 income families vs. the 1 income families of that era.

My son asked last year what income class our family was in. I really had no clue so I looked up what the IRS reports say. I was really shocked to find out we made more than 65% of americians. How can that be? Do we own our own home - NO. Do we drive new cars- NO. Do we have money set aside for our kids education - NO. Do we work our asses off to make the bills and provide for a few comforts - yes.

My piont is if you can be in the upper 50 percentile for income in this country and still not be economically stable there is a problem. Guess I just don't see much improvement on the quality of life in our own country lately either.

No the point I was making was we are providing jobs for people in other countries while simultaneously screwing ourselves.

Mr. Fly, please take me out of the we. I am dead against giving jobs to other countries to save corporations money, and that is exactly what is going on.

My apologies, let me rephrase, Corporate America is providing jobs for people in other countries while simultaneously screwing the American Citizen.

Okay, I understand that the government needs to provide for the common good. In the modern age this has been interpreted as taking money from those who have, and giving it to those who haven't. Some people call this socialism. Whatever. It's what we're doing.

Do you really feel that companies, whether privately or publicly held ,should be forced to add to the handout by being forced to operate in an enviornnment where they cannot maximize their profit? How long do you feel that these companies would be able to survive? This is called killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Were all on the same page here, I totaly agree with everyone.
No trolls on this thread!
As I think back I find myself having thoughts of the worse nature instead of the question at hand.
Any good that "I'm sure we have done" is totaly overshadowed.
I only hope that the world knows that the american goverment and it's
people are different, and we are being held almost against are will.
Nothing that has been done is the will of the people.
