I personally think the idea of national pride in the US had to do with immigration and the sacrifice/balls it took to come here on a whim and make it in the entrepreneurial capital of the world.

Of course, many people still talk about nationality with pride...and i feel it's only because they think it's the right thing to say, or that it's patriotic, etc...as if they've built some sorta ideology around their idea of patriotism

A nation earns it's status. An ethnicity is not allowed to.
