OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet (three metre) high marijuana plants.
General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defence staff, said on Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.
"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices ... and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa.
"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.


Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.
One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

So, Are we to believe the taliban are stoners. I would assume that if they're hiding in a Marijuana forest, they must be potheads. Maybe they just want foriegners to get out of their country and leave them alone to get stoned! Isn't that pretty much what all stoners want? Lot of maybes in there, but stranger things have happened, Anyway, would be nice to take a stroll through that forest. About 30 years ago on a National Geographic program on TV, I saw a show about a south American tribe that lived in a Marijuana forest. The marijuana trees, yes trees, were 30+ ft. tall (10 meters+). They made a butter like substance out of the resin of the plant which they cooked all their meals with. They were a very happy smiling people. One of the elder men of the tribe climed up into a male tree and grabbed a male flower (about 4 inches in diameter) and put it up to his nose, squeezed it and inhaled the pollen, He then slithered down the tree and sat at the base convulsing for a few seconds. That must have been some good shit! Anyway I've looked far and wide to see that program again so I could tape it as no-one believed me. I'll bet the Govt. confiscated that film and chastised the National Geographic society for showing it as at that time the drug wars were hot and heavy! I've also heard that some tribes in Central America-Southern Mexico, have some very spiritual weed ceremonies where the shaman controls the minds of the people and anyone that breaks the vows of the tribe can be killed by having their heart stopped by the shaman even though they may be hundreds of miles away. In the '60's a couple of hippies stumbled onto this and participated in a ritual, supposiedly, one of them f--d up and died in NYC of massive heart failure, no word on the other one. Weird stories of the THC plant and cultures. Someone with investigative reporting as a background should make a documentary of these happenings. I also saw (around that time-'70's) a Geographic program about a tribe in the mountains of Nepal that cooked with MJ butter, also a very smiley people!

Most of those Islamic Body bombs get pumped up with smoke before they go blow themselves up somewhere............. also the young (kids) troops in the African Islamic groups get high on weed given to them from the adults (war lords).......... it is not like it is something new, the Western armies have used such things as LSD, Speed(still used) to try and get more out of a person..........myself I would go for the weed.


To have a forest of marijuana in front of me, I think I may start filling my pack with some tops (that is if it is not just hemp they grew for cover, because it is working).


What they need to do, drop pamlets over the forest (so as to get the people out of it), then cover it with salt water (more salt then water...lol) from a water bomber, then when it drys out in the afghan heat, burn the sucker down after a day or two.

I think if you "went for the weed" you'd have a bunch of soldiers laying around eating munchies and playing nintendo. Much better to get them jacked up on speed!

lol....... well I smoke weed now and I am not laying around eating munchies and playing video games (maybe 1 or 2 times every two months I might fire up the PS2), but I tend to get high and go hiking with the camera, or some other outdoor thing like golf.

With the hunting season on here and the golf clubs shutting down for the winter, I spend less time walking the woods, and more time at the beach or park.

Golf high is a blast, I am good when I am not stoned, but I really suck when I am high, and it is fun to play when your high, with the rest of the gang. We smoke up before the 1st, and smoke more on the third and fourth holes, and then more on the 7th and 9th holes and so on and so on.......we play two balls each, and carry many more when we are high. lol
