So why do you care if Obama is calling on people to do community service? The community service proposed by Obama is 100% voluntary. If you don't want to do it you don't have to, but if you do, you get money for college.

it is no longer community service, you are working for a non-profit organization and getting a pay-check from the government

the government would be subsidizing charity works.....sounds like communism to me, ohh so does the auto bailout "ya we will give you auto companies money to bail you out, but only if we own a share of your business".......i have a huge problem with the federal government getting more power than it already has

It's better than the way they currently do it, where the government pays for part of your college even if you don't do anything for it. I knew a guy who got a couple thousand dollars as part of a government program to pay for college, but he was just really lazy and dropped out after one semester. Requiring community service to get that money will weed out people like him, which can only be a good thing.

thats why i think most scholarships and federal grant money should be suspended

college degrees are meaning less and less each year, people keep looking to the government as a provider and for handouts, not the way it should be

and it wont "weed" some folks out of it, just provide the people who do do the community service with more money (its much easier for the government to create new laws/acts/grants/what have you rather than repeal older ones. i just disagree with the practice mostly though

asking to do a whole 50 hours a year! damn obamas turnin into a real hitler aint he? i cant believe i see people crying over 50 hours a year, go eat some more donuts and sit your fat asses back in front of the TV because your worthless anyway., 50 hours a year is like an hour and some change a week, damn and some of my friends had to do community work for school anyway, we are turning into some lazy fucks no wonder half the world is starting to pass us.

doing 100 hours of community service will get me 4k for college? where do i sign up? shit that 4k will almost get me my masters degree, wow i might have to work to get my govt grant this time, well better working for it than having it just handed out to joe shmo whos gonna drop out next semester anyway

Like the man said, it's voluntary. If you are a lazy fuck, don't sign up, but don't expect a hand out either. I think it is a great plan. Maybe it would get some of these lazy spoiled fat assed kids off the couch to actually contribute to society, instead of sitting on the couch getting stoned and waiting for mom to come home and hand them some goin out money.

College degrees may not be worth as much as they used to, but you still need one to get hired for most jobs. And while it's true that some degrees aren't worth much, others really will teach you a lot. You can BS your way through a sociology major, but don't try and do that with electrical engineering.

No its not volintary if you need to do it to pass grade and high school. I don't mind people doing it when they are being compensated. Like the collage grant money or tax breaks for the collage students. But it is forced servitude when there is no compensation.

If it was totally voluntary why set up government programs for it you can already volunteer to your little hearts delight.

In Canada all highschool students must complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. Its been going on for a while now.

I think of all the little rich pricks having to work for free and it makes me smile. Its something their rich ass parents wouldn't have taught them. Real underpaid (in this case no pay) work
