John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers' powerful friends, both failed upward. And both shed their skins as Episcopalian members of the Washington elite to build political careers as self-styled, ranch-inhabiting Westerners who pray to Jesus in their wives' evangelical churches.

In one vital respect, however, the comparison is deeply unfair to the current president: George W. Bush was a much better pilot.

So you're saying that voting for Obama rather than McCain would make no difference? I remember making the same argument in 2000, that Gore would be as bad a president as Bush: "a pair of stuffed shirt corporate whores," I remember calling them. I have since found cause to revised my opinion.

Here are are couple of significant differences between Obama and McCain.

Obama is where he is because of his own efforts. McCain is where he is largely because of his grandfather's and father's name and his father-in-law's money.

Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review. McCain graduated West Point--a school he would not have been qualified to attend if he had not been a legacy--894th out of a class of 899.

I don't know about you, but having a smart guy in the White House, and one who knows what it's like not to have a lot of money, would make a big change for the better, IMHO.
